This is my first time using Gordian Knot and it's a cool program. I converted about 5GB of DV down to a one CD DivX 5.03 and the quality is incredible. When I played the resulting Divx in virtual dub i could hear the sound but when i played with media player it was silent. I want to distribute this scouting film to other members of my pack so i want it to be playable with media player. I chose the 1x vbr-mp3 option. Virtual dubs file info says its audio codec is Fraunhoher mpeg layer3. Please provide me with a suggestion to make this file playable with media player. Please be patient, I'm new to Gordian Knot and am willing to try doing different things until I get the desired results.

Thanks in advance,

VC

hi,
first of all, pls make sure you are not violating rule 6 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm). distributing a copy of a dvd is usually not legal!

as for playback... pls try installing the audio filter pack which you find in the www.doom9.org download section

And other members of your pack will need to be able to play DivX back. They'll either need to install DivX (the non-pro version is fine for playback) or install ffdshow. The latter is a "playback-only codec" that understands all sorts of MPEG-4 codecs.

You might also try GSpot; it can tell you what codecs are in the AVI file(s), and if a codec is missing, it will tell you so.

Both ffdshow and GSpot can be found in Doom9's complete download page.

We've got a bunch of PCs at my house and the versions of Windows in use all have MP3 included in them (W2K and WME), so I've never had your particular problem.

Thanks for the advice guys. I tried encoding again last night and had success. Instead of selecting mux only, i selected one of the MP3 options and it played back nicely with media player. I'm going to reencode tonight to leave a little space to put a divx codec and some installation instructions on the CD.

Hey Killingspree,
first of all, pls make sure you are not violating rule 6. distributing a copy of a dvd is usually not legal!

Thanks for the tip bro but I read the rules and would not do intentionally do anything that could ban me from the forum. This ia a family video.

Thanks again. Now I gotta shoot some more fottage so that I can try GK again.

hi again,
good to hear that you've had success with your project.
to elaborate a little further, what 'went wrong' the first time, when selecting just mux, gknot takes the ac3 file you demuxed with either dvd2avi or robot4rip (if you haven't tried it, give it a shot :)) and multiplexes it into the avi file. this is perfectly ok if you intend to do so. you will have the exact same sound as on the original DVD then. catch is, that it of course needs the same space, which is between 300 and 450 megs for a normal DVD 5.1 sourround soundtrack!

if you previously made your calculations based on a normal 128 kbit mp3 audio track, this will definitely throw off all size expectations... :)

anyway, in order to playback an avi file including an ac3 track you have to install special filters. there's quite a number available, but i personally would recommend ac3filter which can be found in the download section of www.doom9.org. it is freeware and imho the best one around!

hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. You answered my next question even before I had a chance to ask it. I was wondering how people were getting DivX with AC3. I skipped the part about using the dvd2avi because my original was DV so i didnt have ac3 originally. I had DV audio. So in order to convert it to ac3 should I use ac3 machine and then name it as the same name as the source video? Also shall i use source video with no audio. I already have ac3 filter installed so i should be in good shape. Should i also send the others that i plan to have watch these DivX ac3 filter as well as the appropriate video codecs.

Thanks for the help,
