Help me! I lost my avi's header ! :(

yes thats right.It is the movie 28 days later.I ripped it a while ago,and burned it on a cd-rom,2 days ago when i tried to play the file again media player said it cannot open it,yet determine the file type :(

I tried to copy the file to the hdd with iso buster and there it is !The first 40-50 kb in the file is missing,with my little knowledge about avi's i thought there was the header of the avi in that lost part,

The question is how can i make the file playable ? :confused:

I am afraid i'm not sure about the codec it can be xvid (strongly) or divx? but sure one of this codecs.

I do not want to make another encoding because THAT WAS PERFECT.i want my avi back !

Please help me ...

I don't think there is any way to repair the header. It contains too much information that need to be known for playback, and if those are missing, the whole video file is unusable.

Just rip it again. Since you ripped it yourself before that must mean you have the dvd still, right?

Edit: In fact, if you ripped it years ago, you'd do best to just rip it again, codecs have moved forward quite a bit.

Hehe, that's true!
But "28 Day Later" is a very recent movie I think! In our country it has just hit the theatres last week!...

Really? Hmmm, I suggest you to make a small document or something for every rip you make, to write in the software and the settings you used to encode it!
That way, it's very easy to reproduce it exactly ;)

thanks all for your replies,the worst part is i rented that dvd and ripped it,and now i dont have it anymore.I will try the avipreview console in http://www.funkster.org/ as one of you suggested,i am not sure maybe VideoLAN would work ? Can someone say stg about it ?

Hmm. Seems to me you're breaking rule #4. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Build the MPEG-4 IP tools, use the xviddump program (? just going to check if that's what it's called), repackage into an MP4 container, use VDubMod to convert back to AVI.

Trivial really.

Okay, it's called avidump60, sorry for the confusion, since it's a GPL'd tool though I don't think I can upload a copy for you, sorry =/ Or can I? I'm not that good with liscences, but I've already compiled the whole set of tools myself, so if I *can* give it to you, by all means I will.. :devil:

Why can't you open it up in VDubMod with the index rebuilding and such turned on?
