why do it?

why do the studios encode all anime DVD's as Interlaced, and not leave it in FILM format. and other movies for that matter.

i know that its supposted to look better on a Interlaced display (eg.TV) but seriously i have noticed no difference when playing it back on my standalone DVD-Player as proggressive. I assume the DVD-Player applys a Pulldown anyway.

sorry if im sounding like a sook, but im just curious to know why movies are telecined in the first place.

normally most of them are masterd to be watched over TV transmisions.. so they are going to be interlaced. If it was something that is released ONLY for movie theatres FIRST.. ex. GHOST IN THE SHELL....then it most likely will be 100% progressive.. but not always.. it depends a lot on how the people want to encode the dvd, just to make our lives harder

I agree with fedge. Most of the anime we're seeing released on DVD today was mastered for television transmission sometime in the past. It's much easier and much cheaper to do a DVD transfer from these telecined television masters than it is to transfer from the original cell art, or even from the original cell films (if they still exist).

I think we'll see this change over the coming years, as more and more of today's animation is being processed digitally.

Yeah, easy easy easy. But it will be more space and quality effective if you IVTC the anime before encoding to DVD, so you can encode in progressive mode. Field-based compression generally sucks. Plus if it's old anime you can do better source filtering (of course it's also easier not to do that at all) in progressive mode. Conclusion: DVD authorers are lazy. And that's not news.

I still think there must be an easier way,

I am a noob with Television Broadcasting, but i know that they can output to Progressive or Interlaced whether it is Analog or Digital broadcasting.

why do they have telecined television masters?

why dont they have the original master stored as progressive masters?

cant the broadcast equipment apply Pulldown?

so then when they need to transfer the anime to DVD the process is easier.

someone correct me if im wrong
