I was just curious as to what media most people were using to backup their movies. Reading through the forums I got the feeling that most people use the DVD-R standard (could be wrong about that). I am pretty new to the process and use mostly DVD+R for no particular reason at all. If you have a compelling reason (not so compelling is ok too) for using either standard I would be very interested in hearing about it.

Once I get the new Plextor burner the choice will be clear (8x/4x burning compared to 4x/2x), for now with the A05 / DRU500A combo I use DVD- media.

I prefer DVD+ but this is only a decision I made long time ago. The writing speed of the DVD- devices was slow and the compatibility of DVD+RW should be much better then DVD-RW... so I purchased a Ricoh MP5120... but the truth was another thing.
After a year I tried to get the new NEC 1300A but without any success. This drive was announced for december 2002 but in april 2003 I wasn't able to wait anymore and I bought another NEC, the 1100. This is a +R drive again but it makes no trouble and the burning result as always as expected.

Greets, CouJo!

Nearly the same reasons as CouJo. I have Ricoh 1525 (HP DVD WRITER 200i) and have no troubles with it. The price of DVD±R media are nearly the same (+R media are little bit expensive but allow you to burn faster (2.4x) than -R (2x). 4x speed quality media have similar price in my experience. And here in Europe is almost unable to get Ritec (-R) media so I´m going to stay with +R in the future ;).

I got the new Pioneer DVR-106D so I can burn both formats but I prefer dvd-r/w of course because they are cheaper to buy and work in more stand alone dvd players.

I should mention that I ALWAYS buy 4x dvd-r also. Anything else and you go crazy.. At 4x my dvd movies are done in little more than 13min.

I think it's unlikely that both formats will survive another year now when almost all new pc-burners can handle both formats. It's of course much more economic for the disc manufacturers to concentrate on one format and since the + discs are said to be a little bit cheaper to produce I don't think anyone will invest in new - manufacturing equipment.

I have the NEC 1300a and it eats most DVD blanks I feed it.
Having said that there are a few players in my vicinity that don't except +R although +RW is alright. So I burn -R to be safe.

I have an NEC-1100 and never have had a bad burn. So, I would have to go with the DVD+R.

hi,

i've got a pioneer dvr-106d and i use both formats. on the R-side i use dvd-r because they're cheaper, on the RW-side i use dvd+rw because they can be burnt at 2.4x and they're not much more expensive than dvd-rw.
