View Full Version : Does Nero 6 Actually do ANYTHING?

It looks nice, but every time I try and burn a disk I get the message "Disk is in use by another application" Not right away, of course; Oh, no, it wastes five minutes copying files and doing all manner of things without bothering to update the status bar before reporting the fact.

I vaguely recall seeing this error mentioned elsewhere and wondered if anyone had a solution. There is nothing in the FAQ on the Ahead site.

Well the solution was easy: Uninstall Nero 6 and revert to Nero 5, which works fine.

I'm afraid that's a score of -1 out of 10 for the boys over at Ahead Software gmbh!

Hmmm...I've been using Nero 6 for a couple of days now without problems. They had a patch for it, maybe they fixed some bugs in the initial release.

I was running the latest version, which I think was 6.0.0.11 from memory.

The problem is that a message saying that the drive is in use by another application is completely useless, unless that message gives some clue as to what that application is. It's also extremely irritating for the message to appear at the very end of the burn preparation process and not right at the start!!!!!!

As far as I can see I had no other applications running at the time that were using the drive, and rebooting with all "load at startup" software disabled didn't fix it. I tried several times.

It's also very suspicious that Nero 5 works fine. I hope Ahead aren't falling into the same trap that Roxio (formerly Adaptec) seemed to have done with Easy CD Creator; spending all their time on the fluff and neglecting the stability of the core!

btw It's probably worth adding that I'm running XP Pro SP1 with a Firewire DVD Writer and an IDE Plextor CD Writer.

I don't know about Nero 6, But I sometimes have this problem with 5. I have stopped using Nero altogether for this and now use the burning app with Tmpgenc DvD Author. It works very well. I also discovered it will force the drive to unlock if Nero reports this problem.

I had some fun with Nero 6. Bottom line is I got rid of it after 2 discs gave read errors in powerdvd. Back to nero 5 and no read errors. on a pioneer a04...they would burn fine, but nero6 did something to them that it shouldn't have. I dont think I updated it to the latests version, don't think I will go back to it in any case.

The fix for "disk in use by another application" at least this worked for me:

Do not exit out of DVD Decrypter leaving it is "write" mode.
Open DCD Decrypter and make sure its in "read" mode then exit.

Hope this works for you.

lol, how did u work that one out?!
Device communication wise, there is no difference between the various 'modes' of dvd decrypter. The same shutdown procedures are called no matter which one you're in.

Afraid not. I'm not using DVD Decrypter; just writing some data to a DVD-R - the kind of thing that you'd expect any old CD/DVD Mastering application to be able to do in its stride ;)

I didn't work out anything, invested four hours of trial and error procedure and stumbled on it.... AS I said, it works for me.

Possibly my opening DVD Decrypter and changing it to "read" mode, then closing the program, somehow unlocks the drive. Unitl I did this Nero kept giving me the error message and RecordNow returned a bad media message.

I had this problem and the FIX for me was to put the DVD burner as the master and any other burners as slaves. That took care of the problem right away.

Unfortunately, I can't do that with a FireWire drive. But anyway the problem is fairly and squarely in Ahead's court. They have made a change from 5 to 6 that has introduced this problem. 5 works. 6 doesn't. (For me, anyway)

My verdict is as before: 6 gets a score of -1 out of 10. And that's being generous.

i say just stick to Nero 5, and get the latest version (5.5.10.50).

this is nothing new, and happens with most programs and operating systems. Nero6 new, hasn't been properly tested but they sell it anyway, and when a problem is reported by millions of people, they make a fix for it. nero 5 has been out for ages and there have been many updates and so it's more stable (and actaully works). so unless you need a new feature of Nero 6 stick to Nero 5.

Ive only burned one disk in nero6 and Power DVD reported it as been damaged to inhibit playback, I`m going to start using Pinacle Instant DVD again as I had no problems with that.

Maybe down to a bad dvd but I`m using Datawrite Classics and this is the first coaster!

Hmm, I've been using Nero 6 since the day it came out and haven't had a single issue in either operation or the discs it writes (CD or DVD, well over 200 discs). Have you guys turned off Windows built-in IMAPI service (might that lock your drive)? Is WMP running in the background with the Nero plug-in enabled? Obviously some other appliaction is locking your drive and it's not Nero's fault it can't access the device.

I didn`t have a problem with locked drives, I set it off to write and then verify the data onto a dvd+r which it did.

I used the Video DVD setting and checked everything before the burn, it`s a bit odd?

There's 6.3 you know. I've been using it and no problem so far.
