I've been using ritek go4 dvd-r disks and am really happy with them, no problems. I just bought a 100 pack spindle that only burns at 2x (30 minutes). Why is this? Here is the info I got from dvdinfo.

Book Type DVD-R
Media type DVD-R V2.2
Loaded Media Speed 4.0x 5540KBps

I think we need some more information such as what DVD burner are you using, what firmware does it have, also what program are you using to burn the disk, and how did you set the speed.

Sorry
I'm using Sony dru500a using firmware 2.0e
nero burning rom 5.5.10.35 it usually sets the speed at 4x and says it is writing at 4x but takes 30 minutes for a disk instead of 15

Are you burning on the fly or doing background tasks ? I often find if encoding in the background it slows it right down.

no it is writing with no other tasks

same problem here with the 500 ax... some people say sony has a vendetta against ritek... I am able to increase my 4x burns to :most of the time" but i still get the ocasional 2x burns once in a while...

i did 3 things, maybe they all three did it, or only one, i dont know cuz i aint changin nuthin now that i got it workin ok

1 made the 500ax the master on secondary ide with no slave
2 updated my nero to v6.0 because i noticed with 5.5.10.15 always burning at 2x, dvd decryptor burnt at 4x pretty often
3 updated to 2.0f firmware for sony

like i said, it sorta worked for me... i am able to burn 4x most of the time with nero now, but never was able to hit 4x even once before i changed those three things.

I am using DRU500A also and I have 4x Ritek's from rima.com, latest firmware, Nero sees the disc at 4x and says it is burning at 4x but takes a full 30 mins to complete. I have no clue why this is... DMA is enabled.

why do you guys waste your time...trust me...give up with Ritek 4X DVD-R (some batches will burn 4X and some won't and some with only certain firmware..screw ritek 4x..they are NOT consistent media at all). I have sony dru500ax and have made the switch to 4X DVD+R (tdk, memorex). Oh well, guess everyone must 'learn the hard way'. Nothing wrong with that I suppose.

Mr Bass,

i respect your knowledge but I think the comment about Ritek G04 is a bit out of line or maybe out of context.

My personal experience and that of many others over some time supports the statement that Ritek are in fact quite consistent, especially on the Pioneer burners.

If your comments are specific to the Sony burner, then you may want to edit the comment.

There have been many posts and polls but here is one link that supports the fact that many people have good experience with Ritek.

I use Nero 6 with the latest hacked firmware for the Pioneer 105.

Some of the Ritek's will burn on 4x speed some of them will give an error (power calibration error) but the disc will not get wasted, I can burn it at 2x afterwards...

I don't know what's going on, just posting to let you know.

i agree with windtrader: as a satisfied owner of a pioneer 105, i consistently reverted back to ritek for its excellent price/performance ratio and player compatibility after trying out quite a few other media. ritek may not be the "creme de la creme," but i think it's everyone's own choice on how valuable his/her data is, so i wouldn't generally condemn riteks. there's always the option to buy more "reliable" media (at an additional premium, of course) such as verbatim's data life plus et al. but for me PERSONALLY, my burned dvds can be reproduced at any time since it's merely a backup, and so far, my oldest dvd-backups (about a year old and written with a pioneer DVR-A04) are just as readable as if they were burned yesterday :). not so with my princos (mea culpa - i know i won't touch them again!!!).

but i guess the bottom line is that there will always be the unknown variable of whether a media works in combo with a certain drive. i did a lot of trial and error and found the favorite food for my drive which is ritek. if someone is interested, this link (taken from another thread) shows empirical evidence that ritek g04's are certainly of high quality:

... just my 2 cents ;).

This brings up an interesting issue for me. I am the owner of a Sony 500A with the newest firmware. I will soon be needing additional media, but I have an issue.
My Neice's DVD player refuses to read +R media, while having no issues with +RW, -R, -RW. I am not going to give an original expensive movie that I paid good money on to an 8 year old. I would just do RW discs, but she is the type to watch a movie 100 times over months and I don't want to put out that kind of money on a disc that she could ruin just as easily.

I have been getting by with G03's with no problems for some time now and was considering switching to G04's from now on. For me speed really isn't the issue as I will burn while doing something else.

If the GO4's are not the -R answer for a reasonably priced DVD-R then what is? I am not going to pay much more then the already outragous price increases. When I started buying G03's they were $.85 a disc shipped. Now if you can get them for less then $1.20 shipped your lucky.

For movies I will only be watching I have some 4X ricoh discs, but I want to standardize so if there is stuff we both want to watch.

Any answers? Is there an issue buring a G04 at 1X other then wasting money on a disc meant for 4X? I ask this if the 03's are no longer avaiable after a time.

not sure what what you are asking but it seems if you need to stay with G03 -R media due to compaitability with your niece's requirements and your desire to keep the cost down. Since you are experiencing good fortune with the Ritek, stay with them. Speed - not an issue - why pay more for G04. Price gone up - oh well. I'm sure your auto gas bill has gone up a lot more :-(

My question was based on the idea that I heard the G03's are being discontinued. Don't know if it's rumour or not, but I have heard it from multiple reliable sources.

Supermediastore.com (Yes, I am aware of their sometimes bad reputation), with the coupon 'sept1-5off' has G3s for 52.50 per 50, shipping for $5... that makes them about $1.15 a disc.
