As im a pal user i would like your advice on backing up Tears Of The Sun(R1).

Now Bitrate viwer tells me this ..

Num. of picture read: 31
Stream type: MPEG-2 MP@ML VBR
Resolution: 720*480
Aspect ratio: 16:9 Generic
Framerate: 29.97
Nom. bitrate: 9800000 Bit/Sec
VBV buffer size: 112
Constrained param. flag: No
Chroma format: 4:2:0
DCT precision: 10
Pic. structure: Frame
Field topfirst: Yes
DCT type: Frame
Quantscale: Nonlinear
Scan type: ZigZag
Frame type: Progressive

And dvd2avi tells me ...

Frame Rate - 29.970
Video Type - Starts off as 'Film',but after about 1 and a half minutes it changes to 'Film 99%'
Frame Type - Progressive

But when i hit F5 to preview the video i can clearly see combing, when the video is progressive.

So how do i back this it to give me nice high quality picture.

First off, the framerate that dvd2avi reports is for the OUTPUT, not the source. Take any NTSC source and preview it in DVD2AVI with forced film on, and it will report 23.976fps regardless of what the fps of the source is. Turn off forced film and you always get 29.97fps. All you need to worry about is the % FILM.

Don't worry about if you see combing in dvd2avi, this doesn't really tell you much. %99 FILM is fine and perfectly normal. The opening credits are almost always interlaced, so its not going to be totally FILM. Just use forced film on these types of DVDs. I ripped Tears of the Sun R1 with forced film on and it turned out just fine.

If you for some reason don't trust dvd2avi then go ahead and turn forced film on and create the d2v project file. Import it into TMPGenc and preview it and see if you can find any interlaced fields, though I wouldn't be concerned if you see some during opening or closing credits, and if so then go back and process the movie with forced film off.
