Real time Encoding with these formats ???

Is it at realtime encoding with these codecs with a p4/XP 2000+???

just catching up with all these codecs, but with the faster modern CPUs, are any of these codecs encoded in realtime??

can mpeg2 encoded in real time?? i am asking this coz Pinnacle has a USB PCTV thats slated as realtime mpeg2 capture.

i can record dvd-res divx in realtime, at very high bitrates (~10mbit/sec) and that's practically perfect quality. i'm using something quite a bit faster than a 2000+ though. at lower bitrates/not combining fields/lower res, i could get away with it on a slower pc.

you didn't ask about any other codecs though. :)

i never do mpeg-2 but it'll depend on the bitrate, resolution, and specific mpeg-2 codec you're using.

you're talking about a usb capture device? i'd think it'd be hardware compression, because usb1 can only transfer 1MB/sec (8mbit/sec) which is far too slow to transfer uncompressed video, and THEN compress it with the pc's cpu.

with a fast-ish pc, you'll be able to record in realtime with most codecs, i'd imagine. the faster, the better quality though.

I have an Athlon XP 1600. I used to use an old ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder video card and a slow (ATA33 5600RPM) harddrive. With that, I could encode 480x360 with DivX 5.0.1 in one-pass hi-quality mode at 4000Kbps without dropping a frame. I would then go back and do a two-pass encode afterward to get the size down. I have since gotten a new GeForce AGP 8X card and an ATA133 7200RPM harddrive and newer codecs. I have no doubt my pokey little Athlon XP can now do 640x480 without dropping a frame at those same quality settings.

Be sure to use the capture facility in VirtualDub. All other capture programs I have tried have too much over-head for low(er) end systems to do real-time encoding.

I was somehow able to capture MPEG-2 320x480 with my ATI Aiw 128 Pro PCI card on my slow T-Bird 650mhz. :D I've tested other software MPEG-2 encoders and none were anywhere nearly as fast in real-time.
For Xvid if I lower the settings I can manage to capture 320x480. ;)
(of course this is at 29.97fps)
