this may sound a bit dumb but i wanted to ask when i am ripping a movie with ac3 5.1 channel movie do i need

to select the mpeg 5.1 in the audio section in DVD2SVCD software?

no, the audio section is what output format you want to have, in this case it should just be stereo, as mpeg5.1 is incompattible with 99% of dvd players and is a pretty good waste of space for SVCD's :)
