I don't know if it will help you, but it should give you a good starting point. Although I think the answer is based on what you will be doing and what software you plan on installing that would determine the answer.

Don't even think of spending your cash on that crap :P A single P-4 2400(and up)HT-800FSB CPU will give you incomparably better performance levels due to its more advanced architecture(not to mention way faster/modern chipsets available for P-4 today. None of the SD-RAM based solution,(and this is exactly what this Dual P-3 machine is based on) can compete with that.

A good /brand quality /RAM is the key for a better performance, go for the best you can afford and pay attention to the CAS ratings.

I agree w/ Ramirez, I just went from a dual p3 1ghz system to a p4 2.4 hyperthreading system with dual channel ddr 400, and the speed change made me want to give my old system away (as far as encoding and media capabilities go). But even without the dual channel memory, the p4 2.4 can still kick ass, and I've heard (not witnessed) of overclocking this chip to 3ghz+ with a good oc board.

Try and get your hands on P4 2.6GHz / 800MHz FSB. Some of these chips can go up to ~3.3GHZ, remember though that each chip is different and thus each has it's own limit. THE Hyper-Threading is also a great feature. You'll definately want CAS Latency 2 RAM, good brands are Cosair and Mushkin. King-Max is cheaper, but still good (obviously not quite as good). Best P4 Motherboard right now is the Abit IC7/IC7-G. The IC7-G comes with onboard ethernet and SATA while the IC7 doesn't.

well actually i "accidentally" bought a gigabyte GA-7VAXP plus 521 Mb PC2700 Kingston from ebay...........

which means an Athlon....what do you guys say??? IDIOT??? FSB is only 333Mhz, can it match the pentium4??

i don't know that board, but do a spot of googling and see what kind of fsb people have gotten out of it.

i currently run a 133mhz fsb athlon @ 185mhz fsb, and a higher-than-spec multiplier. if i could be bothered, i'd push it further, but i really don't have the time to mess about just now. athlons are very overclockable, but it depends very much on the motherboard and memory too.

isnt modern processors fast enough NOT to overclock??? i mean a 10% increase in clock speed, isnt noticeable, and when you are doing heavy encoding tis a good way to kill your CPU in a hurry...

what cooling are you using at 180+fsb???

also is more memory better than faster memory?

10% increase? how'd you work that out? i'm on a 45% overclock here. anyway, an overclock is about far more than raw cpu speed. when you start raising the fsb, it'll throw far more memory about, which gives one hell of a speed boost.

just a volcano 9 for the cooling. you really think that with the lifespan of a processor, you're REALLY gonna notice only getting 5 years out of it instead of 15? I'd rather not be using a 5-year old processor. I'll be using something much faster then. :) overclocked, of course ;)

you're welcome to pay over the odds for a processor, but i'll happily buy a cheap one from a good batch and push it for all it's worth. i upgrade at least once a year anyway, so i may as well save money on the cpu, and spend the extra on quality memory, and an overclocking motherboard.
