For some reason I can't play XviD files with WMP 9. I installed Koepi's codec package but only the sound for XviD movies will play, there's no movie. I can only think that I'm doing something wrong, what exactly do I need to get and do to get XviD to work?

AFAIK Koepi doesn't provide a codec pack. I don't presume you've unwittingly installed the Nimo codec pack? Other than that, try a different player and/or ffdshow.
This sounds a bit like you're not talking about back-up copies of DVDs that you own. Please note that we don't provide help for playing back illegaly obtained copies of movies. (Disregard this if you are indeed unable of decoding your self-produced files.)

Best thing is to install NIC's standalone directshow filter. You can get it from Koepi's site.
He could be downloading legal XviD files from the Internet. I myself have put videoclips I've filmed with a DV cam online, using XviD and Matroska formats.

Koepi has an old build of Nic's standalone. Get Nic's latest build from Nic's site...
