Not MAX cpu usage!?!

(I think this is the real palce i should have posted from the beggining. PLZ help anyway u can).

Problem is:
I cant get my Virtualdub mod 1.5.4.1 to work at full speed..it only uses the 66-72% of my cpu..wtf?

What i do:
I use Gordian Knot 0.28 beta and i use dvddecrypter to rip.then dvd2avi and then i set the parameters for vdub mod to do a compressibility check.Thats where gordianknot always want me to point out where vdub mod is,even though i set it the previous time! Anyway,thats not the real problem.When im doing comp check and when im encoding afterwards,i can't get vdub to work more than 66-72% of cpu usage.I run only vdub and the basics in the background (inc. gknot) and vdubs priority is always set to low (by deafult!!).
I change it to normal and above normal but nothing changes!!Still 66-72% usage.
Vdub mod is using 200-260mb of ram,and a pagefile of 400-450mb.
My current rig is:
P4 2.6 800fsb,on an ASUS p4p800 mobo,with 1024 mb drr ram(2x 512dual)@400mhz,on a maxtor sata 120gb.Windows XP sp1 with all the updates,Divx 5.0.5 pro.

My settings are: GMC,qpel,bidirectional enc.,Lanczos.
i get 10-16fps with those settings,but i think it should be going a lot better,with a 2.6 cpu!!

Can u help/advise?

That behaviour is quite normal (unfortunately) for a dual cpu (real or hyperthreading). You see the problem is that not all filters and codec settings can be fully processed in parallel (which is what your hyperthreading pentium tries to do), simply because they were not written to work that way.
Once one (virtual) cpu is busy calculating something, the 2nd (virtual) cpu can't continue if it needs the results of the first. The same thing happens with real dual cpu's (like mine).

There's not much you can do about it, short of disabling some settings in the codec and using less filters in your Avisynth script.

I have tried disabling hyperthreading and testing the before/after results using many video editing softwares and the result is usually the same amount of time to accomplish both ways. The difference is that when disabling hyperthreading I can't use my computer for other tasks. 50% of cpu usage while hyperthreading is kind of the same as 100% when disabled. There are lots of threads on this that explain it in MUCH more detail, but this is the jist I got out of reading them...

Acaila thanx,you were right.
As dvd_maniac mentioned,i disabled ht and the cpu maxed @ 100%.It took me 4.26 for a compress check.
I reenabled ht and it took me 4.06 (!) for a check,even better,even @ 70%usage.

AS for what to do why dont you update your GKNOT to the latest version ie .28.5.2 it sound like u got a much older version

I see basically the same result in VirtualDub using no filters and only using the DiVX 5.05 codec. It's strange, I would think that the DiVX codec would be multithreaded and take advantage of SMP or SMT setups more. Anandtech and other sites have tested with SMT enabled and disabled and often showed a 20% increase in encoding speed. Yet I'm showing that only 1 virtual CPU is being used (50%).

There is a version of Xvid from uManiac's optimized for dual CPU maybe this can help also computer with Hyperthreading.

Is it Dual CPU or Hyperthreading optimized? win2k is also dual cpu optimized, but will not use the full capabilities of hyperthreading.
