I have a Western Digital External 80GB, 7200 RPM drive. It works fine for me and runs quite too. I've had it for about 9 months now and I haven't had any problems with mine. But I wouldn't worry about the noise; if the drive still works fine then let it be. The noise could also be the fan inside the hard drive, maybe it's about to go....that usually happens when fans are about to die.

Well, I guess the WD is not quite a Seagate ... scnr. Seriously, I haven't bought any Seagates in the last 8 years so I wouldn't know how they sound like, but that "clicking" from your WD is most like the parking mechanism for the heads. Different brands, different mechanisms, different sounds ... no need to worry, I'd say.
And Angelus, are you trying to pull our legs here? There's no fans inside a HD ... who told you that nonesense?

My external HD gets pretty hot when its plugged in, so yeah....there's a fan inside mine. I can feel it blowing when its plugged in :D .

The fan is in the External housing unit of the drive, not the hard drive itself

i guessed that it was the "parking" noise, but the seagates never had them !! and sometimes it get irritating

I am using WD800JB for a 6 months. And at the start and shutdown it does not have any "parking" noise.

dont u get a click and clunk whenever the drive reads to platter? but this is "after " the light go off the harddrive usage...
it s not the continuous noise....just the residue "single" noise....
