View Full Version : How to put on multiple CDs?

Let's say one has an uncompressed AVI of a film, and with an encoder like Tmpgen converts it to a format for VCD or SVCD. Even with the former, if the film is longer than 70 minutes or so, it will not fit on a single CD. (50 minutes or so for an SVCD, correct?)

So, after encoding one has an .mpg file that is too large for one CD. How do you burn that file to two or more CDs, so that you come to the end of one CD, and switch to the next one, in watching the film? Will tmpgen encode into multiple files, each the size of one CD? (I didn't notice that in the options, it looked like the output was to only one file, but I haven't tried it yet.)

If not, is there another program that splits the resulting single encoded file into the multiple files necessary for the multiple CDs?

I've read about people doing the actual burning to CD with the program "Nero". I don't have that program. The program that I use for burnign data or music CDs is "Roxio Easy CD Creator Version 5" (basic), which came with my CD recorder. Do I just burn the resulting smaller .mpg files (each sized to one CD, however that is done)to the CD with Roxio as I would if they were data files? (Roxio only lists two kinds of CDs--"data" and "music", no mention of "video CDs".)

Or, if Roxio won't burn the encoded files correctly to make a VCD or SVCD, do I have to buy Nero? Or are there usable burning programs one can download?

So, in summary--will Tmpgen encode into a VCD or SVCD format in multiple files, if the movie is too large to fit on one CD? If not, what programs are used for such splitting? And--what programs can be used to burn the resulting .mpg files to the CDs?

Thank you for your assistance.

You will make the moderators get all tetchy asking questions like this.

You should read some of the posts in this forum(seach button), they will usually answer all your questions without you having to ask them(or before you knew what the questions were).

VCD and SVCD are much more than just Mpeg files, they have to each comply to a format to be recognised and play correctly on standalone players(kinda like DVD).

Use the exellent program called DVD2SVCD (see the relationship to this forum!!!) to control tmpeg, it will take your AVI stream and spit out .bin/.cue image files ready to burn onto CD-R.
