well for those of you who don't browse digital-digest forums i just thought i would inform you of any news that isn't posted on doom9 about our favorite transcoder :D

posted my ddlooping (moderator) at digital-digest forums:

***DVD Shrink v3.0 Final. Not before September.***
Hi all.

dvdshrink is gonna be very busy with another project for the next 2 / 3 weeks.
So don't expect v3.0 Final to be released before the beginning of September at the earliest.

We'll just have to be patient.

just thought i'd let you know

well, I was hoping that he'll gonna fix the desaturation problem (mentioned in an other thread) ...
anyway, It's too hot for watching movies ;-))

mikegun: on the other hand, being out in the sun is also too hot unless you have a lake or pool nearby.. I almost died when I was outside last week-end. In fact I'm thinking about moving to the basement until the heat wave is over ;)

Has dvdsrhink commented on the desaturation problem, yet ?

I hope he is aware of it, because i think it's a major problem, which may spoil very colourful movies...

Did this color saturation issue begin with v3? Do you guys notice it at low compression levels (5-15%) or is it consistent throughout the full range of compression?

I noticed it in V3, but I couldn't say if it hasn't been there before. But on the other hand I didn't hear of this problem in older versions and I think somebody would have discovered and mentioned it, if it has been there before.

I can't say if this problem is consistent throughout the FULL range of compression, because I did only 4 DVD's with v3 ranging from 60-80% compression level and i noticed it on all of them, so i suppose that it will happen on other compression levels, too.

Oooops...

I just did some quick testing on 24 Season 1, RC2, Pal (1st Epsiode, chapter 1&2)

The picture which DVDshrink 3.0 produces is even slightly desaturated when you do "No Compression"-Level or 100%. Regarding the colours its no difference between the "No compression"-Picture and a "65%-Compression" Picture of DVDshrink.

And now something which hit me like a bomb...: DVDshrink 2.3 produces desaturated pics, too: During my quick test run, i did a "No Compression" backup of the same scenes in DVDshrink 2.3 and it produced the same colours in the pictures as in those of DVDshrink 3.0 beta 3...

Huh, how comes, that i didn't see it before, when i backuped almost all my movies with DVDshrink 2.3...

So it seems that it is not something specific to the new version of Shrink but to the compression engine of DVDshrink itself.
Maybe its a PAL / NTSC Problem. Can somebody comment if this desaturation happens on NTSC-DVDs, too ?

Haven't noticed desaturation and I've been looking for what you guys are talking about like a hawk on crack. I did 24 season 1 disc 3 and 4 last night with dvdshrink 3.0 beta 3. I watched first episode on original dvd then put in backup copy and watched second episode. My wife noticed no change either. I believe these episodes were set to around 53 to 57% compression and set to automatic.

Are you sure your not using computer software instead of watching it on your TV? Perhaps you installed a new windvd5 or powerdvd5 and that has a default profile that makes it appear so. Try changing the profile to 'original'.

@mrbass

i only installed the new DVDshrink 3.0 betas during the last couple of days. I watched all my test-copies (IC7, Shrink 2.3, shrink 3.0 ) and the original on WinDVD 4.5. Its only a slight difference, which i noticed first and then i captured the same single frame of each test-copy with WinDVD 4.5 to compare the results and actually there is a difference.

I didn't burn the Shrink results to DVD to compare on my telly, because i wanted to keep the more saturated IC7 backups, which are closer to the original.

But as i said i didn't change nor installed anything on my 'puter, that's why i think, it has something to do with DVDshrink.

I can't it explain it to myself any other way.

SirCentipede,

How are you comparing? I could try a couple of NTSC DVDs, although it sounds like MrBass has already done so.

Just capture some before/after frames (.BMPs) with PowerDVD and then compare with some kind of slide show viewer? That's what I've done in the past...

@JFerguson

Yepp, that's exactly what i did.

I captured exactly the same frames of 24, Episode 1 in each test copy (Shrink 3.0 / 2.3 in different compression ratios, IC7 and of course of the original uncompressed DVD) with WinDVD. Ending up with 5 BMP of the different compressed versions of the movie and 1 BMP of the original uncompressed DVD.

After that I run it through the slide show tool of irfanview. The different DVDshrink results had allways the same desaturated colours compared to the original frame. The IC7 result had (to my eye) the same saturation as the original one.

Thank u, JFerguson, for running tests with NTSC-Movies... I'm really eager to learn if this is a PAL/NTSC issue or not...

@quantum

Thank you for your input, as your method settled the saturation issue for me.

@all
Personally i don't think there is a saturation issue anymore. My explanation is here:
