View Full Version : Highlight display delay problem

I have a problem with some menus I am creating in Scenarist. I have used an overlay that when it is not highlighted, is the same colour as the background. The intention of this is for the viewer not to know what the menu contains until they start moving up and down on the remote, slowly revealing the options. The problem is that when the menu first appears, there is a slight delay before the overlay appears, meaning the options are quickly displayed ruining the effect. The same occurs when leaving the menu. Does anyone know of a workaround for this?

You can make the menu completly without the buttons on it, then make the button in the subpicture, then it will only appear when you move up and down.

hi
how to explain that, it's very easy to understand but i try it ?!?
- remove your Button from the Background
- take the Button (only) on the Subpicture
- If not highlighted you should see nothing (all colors = 0) .. if highlighted you see the button
now you only see a button when it is highlighted and not when you start/leave the menu

Sorry guys, I don't think I explained myself properly in the first place. The button areas contain multi coloured text, therefore I cannot use these as the subpics. What I need to do is hide them by having an overlay which is the same colour as the background in display mode and then translucent as they are highlighted, giving the impression that the text appears from nowhere. Thanks anyway though. Anyone else got any ideas?

Ok, I THINK I understand what you're saying.
Try this:
Let's say that the background color is Gray, so make it start with a 15 (full) transparency, and have it set so when it's selected, the transparency drops to 0.

That's what I'm already doing DVD_Master. My problem is that when the menu page is first selected, the background appears about a half second before the overlay, meaning the hidden text is revealed for a moment ruining the desired effect. The same occurs when a selection is made, ie; the overlay leaves before the background, once more revealing the hidden text. If it was video I was working with, I guess I could fade in and ot the begining of the menu, but the problem is I am working with stills. Is this just a limitation of Scenarist or the DVD spec, or am I missing something fundemental here? Someone please put me out of my misery :(

Is it doing this before or after the disk is compiled? Sometimes with scenarist the little glitches and delays that occur in the simulation window don't happen after compiling.

Unfortunatly this occurs after compilation. It appears that this is just a limitation in the DVD spec, maybe the delay doesn't show up as much in all players. The test machine we use at work is fairly low grade, so it may appear worse there. I fear however this will show up to some extent on all standalones. Oh well, no point hitting my head against a brick wall. If it aint gonna work, it aint gonna work. Thanks to everyone who tried to help and if anyone can think of an ingenious way to work around this please let me know.

Perhaps you add a second of the video without the buttons at the start of the menu, so the buttons don't appear until AFTER the bitmaps appeared?
