My PAL DVD's can't output digital (S/PDIF) sound via WinDVD

I ripped my DVD collection with DVD Shrink 2.3 and everything seemed fine until I noticed that all my PAL movies didn't play audio thru the digital S/PDIF out option in WinDVD 5. Why is that? I copied only the movie (uncompressed) and best audio stream with a few subtitles. Every NTSC disc works all the way. Does anyone know what's the matter? I have nVIDIA SoundStorm integrated.

EDIT:
The same problem seems to occurs when playing the original DVD's too!

a) this is definitely not the right forum for the question.
b) as you have said already, this seems to be a general hardware/setup problem!
