 I've been wonder for some time now about divx codec 5.0.5, it has the settings in profiles to choose home theater which says that your encode will play on divx certified devices, is that only dvd players and game council's that will in the future have the ability to play the divx codec?, or can I play it on any dvd players or game council like x box or ps2 at this very moment if i use it? and if you can encode to play on any of the above, when i when i use G-knot, will it automatically add in the fps. and resolution in for me when i go to encode?

no, unfortunately normal DVD players can not play mpeg 4 videos. you have to acquire a special divx capable device.

xbox is another pair of shoes as it is basically a fully functional computer. anyway, i got no experience with these, but iirc there's more than enough info about it in the forum!

Check out the section on the profiles at divx.com. They explain everything well, along with the DivX-certified device program.

Welcome to Doom9's forum, Nate.

The "profiles" are designed to limit codec configurations, to fit with various device limitations. Using a selected profile disables certain features or settings, due to the limitation of the hardware (either already on the market, or in most cases, still pending).

For example, products that are certified as "DivX Home Theater Compliant" do not have to work with DivX video over 4000 kbps. Selecting the "Home Theater" profile limits your bitrate to a max of 4000 kbps. If you clear the "Choose your profile" box, so that you use no profile, your maximum bitrate jumps to 16000 kbps....when i use G-knot, will it automatically add in the fps. and resolution in for me when i go to encode? If you are following Doom9's guide, you will see that fps gets set automatically when you open the .d2v project file, and that you must set your resolution based on removed letterboxing, aspect ratio (which is usually set automatically, but is sometimes wrong), output size, initial b/p*f and subsequent compressibility testing.

that sucks, whish you could play them on any dvd player, it would be really nice to put a divx on disk on go over to a friends and watch it on their dvd player. Is it possible to convert a divx to vcd? or would it be better do find a dvd to svcd program? know of any good ones for newbie's like me?

Standalone DVD players may or may not play VCD, SVCD, or other variants of the Video CD standards.

Standalone DVD players may or may not be capable of reading CD-R, CD-RW, or the various "burnable" DVD media.

For a database of the specific capabilities available by make and model, click on www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers. Note that in some instances, different people will report different results for the same make and model. This is most likely due to a change in player firmware made to the product after initial shipment, but without changing model numbers. The ability to obtain "field updates" from the manufacturers or their authorized service agents will vary....Is it possible to convert a divx to vcd?...

Yes, though the results will be less than spectacular. Doom9 has guides (http://www.doom9.org/conversionguides.htm) for conversion.

...or would it be better do find a dvd to svcd program?...

Yes, it would. Starting from DVD will always produce better results.

...know of any good ones for newbie's like me?...

Time to read Doom9's guides for VCD/SVCD (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/svcd-guides.htm).
