DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 2 is now available.

http://www.dvdshrink.org/

The changes are:

Version 3.0 Beta 2 - 10 Aug 2003

Fixed problem with mapping audio and subpicture stream numbers in re-author mode.

Fixed crash when cancelling quick analysis after opening DVD Shrink by command-line or by clicking on IFO file in Explorer. Now exits gracefully (since cannot continue without at least quick analysis).

DVD disks (as well as files) can now be opened by command line, or by double-clicking in Explorer. For example:

"DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 2.exe" z:\
-> open dvd disk in drive z.

"DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 2.exe" z:\video_ts\vts_04_0.ifo
-> open VTS4 on dvd disk in drive z.

Fixed bug which always required VIDEO_TS.IFO file to be present, even if you open a VTS_xx_0.IFO file.

Files on encryped dvd can now be opened with "open files" option.

Fixed maximize button.

Great work dvdshrink! I am just trying beta2 out now. :)

Regarding the video preview, since I hardly ever expand the dvd structure view I think the best place for the video preview is on that side of the screen leaving more space for viewing/deselecting audio tracks etc.

However, seeing the change log I think you prefer it the way it is. That's ok, but if I disable video preview the video window is still there - would it be possible to remove it in this case?

Thanks for the great work! :D

May have to set up a poll!

I think the right-hand side is better for re-author mode, where you want to expand all the extras etc... it looks more like windows explorer.

The left-hand side may well be better for full-disk backup, esp. if you have a lot of audio/subpicture streams listed.

Hacking MFC to support both is a major pain :-(

Yes, I think many people will disagree with it. However, I can live with it if deselecting Enable Video Playback would remove the video player window.

Unfortunately, I don't program MFC, only Visual Basic etc, would this be hard to do?

@dvdshrink, thumbs up for the new beta!

My intuition would place the video on the left-hand side (as in Recode and as in Windows XP's folder view as well), however, I don't feel it's really a big issue. It would indeed be nice to let the whole preview area disappear if you disable video previews.

Still, I'm wondering if you're planning to work on replacing a video stream with a still. You tactically haven't commented on that :sly:

On image quality:

My own anecdotal evidence tells me that DVDShrink 3.0 (beta 1 and 2) image quality is, indeed, superior to that of shrink 2.3 _and_ Recode. I backed up Braveheart, which had a particularly nasty scene where much macro-blocking could be found in both dvdshrink 2.3 and recode, with Recode coming out slightly ahead in image quality. (I don't think there's a chance I could be giving away a spoiler here this late in the game, so the scene is where Wallace is kicking the town magistrate down the hill after he killed Wallace's wife :)) DVDShrink 2.3 had lots of nasty macro-blocking in that scene. Recode had it, too, but was slightly better. In DVDShrink 3.0, however, it's still there but barely noticeable unless you pause the movie and look for it. Excellent! This is enough to make me switch back to Shrink from Recode for backing up the "tough" movies.

Just thought I'd offer my preliminary findings.

P.S. Bravo on the fast bugfixes and enhancements dvdshrink! Went to bed after using beta1 for a bit, woke up and saw beta2's already out...nice.

One other thought as I'm backing up Braveheart again with beta 2: I noticed that the new version didn't re-analyze the movie when I first opened it as I expected it to. I assume this means that the results of the initial analysis were cached somewhere for DVDShrink 3.0 to use. Does this mean that the deep analyis results are also stored as well? When I started the backup I checked off "deep analysis" but half expected it to just skip that part like it did the initial one. It didn't. Any thoughts? Are the deep analysis results stored or is this a bug?

The deep analysis results should have been stored too... I'll investigate.

Ah, thank you. I should have read the last page and a half in the other thread.

Seems to be working OK...

The only thing I can think, did you re-author the disk, close the window containing the original, and then analyse the re-authored disk?

If you kept the original window open, then the results of the analysis of the re-authored disk would have been fed back to the original and saved to your HD.

If you closed the original window, then, um, not! I'll see if there's anything I can do about it.
