xvid and interlaced videos

I have somes interlaced videos I have recorded with my satellite receiver (dreambox) and I compress them to xvid with vdubmod so that my KISS DP500 can read them.
In 90% of cases, all is OK, but some interlaced videos (10%) gives a bad result when compressed by xvid.
Is there, in general, any way to compress correctly this kind of videos without using any deinterlace filter ?

1st You should search in the forum.
2nd Yes, there's a way. Use the ENABLE INTERLACING button in the Advanced settings. This won't deinterlace anything, just encode the 2 fields separately (better quality and compression)

PS: it seems it has a bug while using B Frames together with interlacing.

Oh great, this is just the info I've been looking for, just found the same problem yesterday. I am desparately trying to find a GOOD way to encode hybrid mixes of teleclined and interlaced material well. This should help. I am very much hoping to find a way not to wsate too much space on the redundant fields coming from the parts that are telecined. Of course, not using B-frames already wastes space, so I hope this gets fixed... but anyway... How is the idea of field based motion estimation moving along these days? Has that been implemented now? I would think this would essentially solve the problem of wasting space with redundant fields.

Personally I much prefer the solution of being able to store field repeat tags and have them regenerated on decode, much like mpeg2, because this should be much faster and I would think much easier to program, but I'll take what I can get. I started a thread (in the wrong forum, you guys seem really great here in the XVID forum) in the development forum about this so please check it out. I really think interlaced videos and especially hybrid videos are something that have been addressed very poorly. interpoloations, repeated encodes of frames and fields with less than ideal ME... yuck, all bad and ugly ideas.

hey bbouchaib2002, do you know of a good rate doubling bob filter for playback.. only one I can find that works is in avs, but I can't get that to work with sound I think and it runs to slowly from inside ffdshow.

download and install DScaler. Then, in ffdshow, under 'deinterlacing', select 'DScaler Plugin', and there, select 'DI_bob.dll' or 'DI_ScalerBob.dll' (the latter isn't liked by all video cards), from DS's respective folder. That's my preferred method for viewing interlaced content on CRT.

By crt I assume you mean tv, not high speed crt monitor. I'll check it out. I want a way to show it as iterlaced on a tv-out for which I didn't think I had to do anything but also want a way to show at double frame rate bobed on my lcd. @Hello, I defintely do NOT want to deinterlace or I would have saved myself the headache and done it before encoding. Anyway, I'll give DScaler a look. Thanks.

ah... yay! DScaler works beautifully. I don't care what people say... nothing beats 60 frames per second and I don't have to mess up my vids with some darn blending and junk. Thanks. Now all I need is a codec with field based motion estimation without breaking B-frames and everything will be great. By the way what's up with ffdsow's "Bob(?)"? I guess I see why it has a question mark.. it seems more like just a SepatateFields() than a Bob... oh well, I don't care now.
