Re-encode XviD w/ XviD to arrive at same file size, tricks??

i guess this applies to all codec's
but i my post is in reference to XviD

basicly i get caught in this situation alot

i have a final file at ~700mb in XviD and then i decide i want to add a filter to it

so i clearly cant direct stream copy,

but for full processing i have to apply the codec again.

is there a setting to arrive at the same size as i started with ??
a quality encode of some sort ??

Huh? Which filter are you refering to that won't change filesize? More information would be a good thing :)

that doesnt matter so much
(EG could be adding a small intro and transition effect in Premiere)

the point is, is there a setting that brings you close to the original file size ??

i heard Quantizer 2 is best quality you can get, so ifs the best quality of the original, would that bring you back to the ~ same file size you started with ??
give or take the small add on intro etc)

any more info needed ??

I think with Quantizer 2 you'll have a qualitry near your original but the size will be higher...

I you want to keep the same file size, you'll have to lose some quality...

Well, any filter can be from a resize to what you are talking, just adding an intro, big difference. Have you tried encoding whatever you want to add with vdubmod (at the same res, codec, etc.) and just adding it w/o reencoding?

As far as lossless encoding, the only thing that I've come close with the XVID codec is 1st pass (dont discard the 1st pass), AFAIK, it encodes at Q2.

yeah for transitions i have had the idea to cut off, say, the first 10 sec and do the transtion with the intro and then append in VD

but runing a sharpen filter or what not through, doesnt seem to be worth it from the sounds of it.

thats a bummer.

(have had video tapes die that i wanted to capture and then encode again as i idnt like my first try and huffy captures lost so unable to encode from lossless form.)

uncompressing the XviD file to, say, huffy and then reencoding with the filter wanted.... wouldnt the XviD codec remove the same (useless) added parts that saving it as a lossless file added??
and thus, bring you back to the same file size and quality, but with the benefit of the filter etc ??

just thought of this,
logically this should be true (if exact same XviD settings are applied) but in practice anyone know ??

To get same filesize, open the file in VD, select the filter and do a 2 pass encode (where you can define the filesize!)...

But I think with reencoding you always lose quality!
Could be possible that the file was really bad encoded and a good filter would help the picture a lot, then you maybe could say you gained quality.

If you just want to change the intro, select the range of it, direct stream copy it in a seperate file (without sound) and the other part in another seperate file and demux the whole audio.
Then encode the intro file with your filters and a 2 pass encode with the same filesize as the seperate file had before.
Open the file and append the other part and mux the audio again...

Or if this is not what you want to do, then I didn't understand your question and I'm just an idiot to write an answer like this ;) :D
