View Full Version : AVI to DVD-R using DVD2SVCD

I should be able to convert an avi to an mpg file that is DVD-compliant using DVD2SVCD, right (although it won't have the correct structure for DVD)? What settings do I need to change to do this? I'm using CCE.
So far I've put DVD2SVCD into advanced mode, changed resize to DVD res under frameserver, changed bitrate to 1CD with size 4550, disabled resampling of audio. Is there anything else I should change?
The problem is I'm getting files that are about 50% of the size they should be. What CCE settings should I be using in the encoder tab? Ideally using one-pass VBR, but multipass VBR is ok if it's impossible to get accurate filesize prediction in 1-pass.
Any help much appreciated, I've looked through the guides, but they all seem to require manual intervention between passes.

atm afaik it is not possible to get a good acurate prediction of the final size with one pass vbr.... why dont use 1 cbr ? if the source is ok then the result should also be since you will have lots of space and will not need to compress it anymore, even the other way around. just use cce with the standard features if you dont know what you are doing... me in my tests allways do as a regular user, so my results would be as what a regular user makes .
in the audio you meant dowsample from 48 to 41 right ?, if so then it is ok.
for making it the regular way just click on dont make images and keep doing as you wrote before, after use for instance spruceup ( NOT DVDMAESTRO ! ) for the authoring its very easy to handle, just rename your audio files and video files to the same name! ( keep the extension ;) ), you can have menus, sub menus and chapters you can navigate beetween chapters and even put more than one movie inside ( i am able to put 3.. depending of the length of them ) but this one do not support subs, if you what to have dvd subs prepare to have more work and to use scenarist or dvdmaestro....also ifoedit is ok but do not handle very wel with ntsc.
1.avi2svcd-----> do not make images, 1 cbr or 2 or 3 vbr or 2 roba
2.rename audio and video to same name
3. author it with spruceup ( no subs )
4.play it :D

Just checking
You have upped the Max bitrate box in the bitrate tab from the SVCD default of 2500ish havent you?
If not send it up to say, 9000. Also ensure the Max Average box is somewhere up there as well, say 7500. Min butrate perhaps 2000ish and leave min avg unchecked. I don't do DVDR so these figures are a bit of an educated guess. You might get better figures from a search but try these if you aren't already doing so.

Thanks for the replies.
I've just done it using 1pass CBR and the filesize comes out just fine (as does the quality - on Equilibrium which is only 105 mins long and quite dark). Even using multipass VBR (with 1 pass), I don't get the right size at all though.
And yes, I did change the max bitrate to 9000 (as well as average). Min bitrate I set to 0.
I'm fairly happy with the quality of one pass CBR though, so I may just stick with that.
Shame there's no way of getting predictable filesize with one pass VBR though...
And, for authoring, should I not let bbmpeg mux the video and audio for me? I was gonna just import the final mpg file (muxed) into an authoring proggy directly?

as you like and as your authoring software will deal with it, i ever used to mux the audio and the video in the dvd authoring software.

What proggies other than SpruceUp do you recommend for authoring (no complicated stuff...just for this)? SpruceUp BSOD's my PC for some reason.

your audio is at 48khz correct? i was confused what i read earlier about 48 to 41 downsampling...DVD audio needs 48khz. I had SpruceUP BSOD on me when i tried importing an illegal audio file. Most of the time it just pops an error up, but it has happened before.

Guys, don't know if you're aware, but there is such a tool for DVD2SVCD. Take a look at this thread:

Hope this helps.

Sorry, I did not notice this thread is just about AVI 2 DVD. :)
I don't know, really, if it will work or not, since I don't do AVI sources.
The author says it will support it soon, since it should not be too much work. But from my knowledge of the tool, D2Sroba just automates DVD2SVCD, it does not use the DVD/AVI source button whatsoever. If any of you guys would be kind enough to try the tool and tell us... My bet is it should work.

I tried using it (latest version) and get an error message saying AVI input is not yet supported. Soon maybe though...
