I read somewhere that encoding directly off your DVD Drive can cause overheated on your drive and eventually make it unusable. Is there any truth to this?
I posted this here since ANYDVD is used with the one click backup programs. IC, CLONEDVD, DVD2ONE....etc

If it's spinning up and spinning down then yes it can prematurely destroy a dvd-rom drive. The old DVDx did this: read 20MB buffer spin down then start encoding, when it was near the end it would read another 20MB.
If it's mostly a constant read and not spinning down then I'd say it's safe to use. But if it ever spins down while waiting for blah blah blah app to process then I'd say it's your gamble.
DVD2SVCD allows you to process directly from a DVD-ROM but provides a staunch warning saying if you destroy your dvd-rom your on your own. I requested the ability to do it from a virtual dvd-rom with daemon-tools and dvd2svcd relunctantly added the capability because he knew some would do it with on-the-fly decryption.

Since all the transcoders do the work in real time, I think there is no damage to backup DVDs from DVD drive directly.

If at all possible, install a 16x dvd-rom reader for about $40.00.
This will save your more expensive burner.
