View Full Version : updated lame_enc.dll (3.90.3) with medium presets!

Hi! Talking at the HydrogenAudio forum I asked to Jhon33 if he could compile a dll of the most recommended Dibrom's version of Lame which is the 3.90.3 (this is due to the extreme tuning made to 3.90.3 by the HA community and so is the best MP3 encoder available) including the MEDIUM presets, which gives you better quality than the --alt-preset 128 while maintaining similar bitrates.
Here's the link: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jfe1205/lame-3.90.3modifiedDLL.zip
I hope that DSPGuru includes it in the next Besweet instead of 3.93.1, which isn't so tuned with the --alt-presets as it is 3.90.3.
It could be a good idea also to remove the link in the Doom9's download page to the Lame 3.93.1 exe and replace it with the 3.90.3 one.
The exe link is this and the version is named "modified" because MEDIUM presets were included, like in the DLL: http://rarewares.hydrogenaudio.org/files/lame-3.90.3modified.zip
You can find a discussion about this compile at this link: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?showtopic=12040

Cheers Fr4nz, John33 :) !
i'll replace the existing dll in BeSweet's package after i recieve some good feebacks (+logfiles+encspot's histograms).

Well actually I used this dll over some AC3 tracks and it works really good!
Bitrates are similar to 3.93.1 dll both with standard and medium presets, and the quality should be superior (but not audible in most cases I think). Remember that Lame 3.90.3 is recommended by Dibrom because of its incredible tuning.
How can I send you my logs/encspot's screenshot?
If you need some tests I can do them for you...lemme know!
Oh DSPGuru if you're interested there's an interesting thread about encoding surround tracks in MP3; this is the link: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?showtopic=12004

Ok I start with my first test, the film is "Terminal Invasion":
This is the first AC3 track I've encoded with this dll (I used --alt-preset standard -b96), as you can see it's all ok:

NOTE: If you want a lower bitrate with the --alt-preset medium you could add for e.g. -b 96, so the codec will make more use of lower bitrate frames downto 96kbps, maybe(?) at the expense of surround channel quality.
Now I'm encoding the same AC3 track with --alt-preset standard...results will follow soon.

the logfiles looks good :).
few notes :
- the "--dither" switch is ignored, since there's a full floating-point process :D
- no need to set "-scale 1". hybridgain will that for you ;)
- any reason why you didn't set any kind of dynamic compression ?
- why are you downsampling ? isn't lame tuned for 48khz yet ?
- films are supposed to have pretty much silent frames, therefore i think it might be better to add "-b32" to your commandline.
Cheers,
Dg.

Here are the answer DSPGuru:
- I didn't know it :o
- I didn't set --scale 1. Besweet do it alone, dunno why.
- I usually don't use it...should I use some sort of dyn.compr.? I'll read the faqs now
- Dibrom said that Lame is tuned for 44.1khz and not for 48khz, so there is the possibility that using 48khz might produce artifacts, but IMHO in any case these would be inaudible. Anyway I want the max. quality, so I stick at 44.1 :D
- Yes maybe it could be a good idea BUT using more bits could be useful for surround channel. Read this thread at HA: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?showtopic=12004
EDIT: With the medium preset (which is not aimed for TRANSPARENT but for GOOD quality) I'll consider to use -b 32 in the commandline.

As you can see all works very well..I tried also to encode these tracks with the 3.93.1 dll and bitrates are almost equal so it's all working perfectly plus we have the perfect quality of Dibrom's 3.90.3!
