I am encoding the material for a showreel for a prominent British DOP. The problem I am finding is the resulting encodes seem to have very crushed blacks, that is to say that the material in the AVI has a great amount of definition that can be made out in the darker areas, however the MPEG has none. An example is a scene where a singer is standing on a stage in a theatre. In the AVI we can make out the furnishishings behind her, but in the MPEG there is nothing but black. It would not be so bad if it were not for the fact that this woman is a director of photography, so her showreel has to show off how good her work is. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Try increasing or decreasing the Quantization Characteristics. The closer the number is to zero the more detail you are likely to see in black backgrounds.
You can read about it in the manual.

Thanks Digital man, we actualy solved the problem. It was an issue with one of our machines playing back the file that was within the 16-235 colour space and showing it as if it was 0-255 therefore crushing the blacks. Thanks again for your prompt response.
