Hello

I'm starting for the first time in to use Virtualdub filters to correct image about my captured PAL VHS. For example the video noise.

I have the following problem:

I Captured with Virtualdub in RGB24 with compression PICVideo MJPEG Codec, quality 19/20 = file size is about 6.700 MB including audio

I compressed in XviD, 2 pass int. 710 mb including audio.

Now I made a little preview file to taste the filters (15 seconds movie) without audio.

I tried the combination:

deinterlace (internal)

temporal cleaner (Casaburi) changing threshold values:
percent = 40
blending = 25

motion blur (internal)

Beautiful no more video noise, nice image but i had a big surprize checking the file done:

starting preview file (15 seconds) 13 mb
final filtered file = 103 mb ??

I start to filter full movie happy for the result.

For the full movie Virtualdub need 68 bigabyte !!!!!!!!!

My hard disk is 40 giga, 20 of that used. what I have to do????

I stopped process... I have no space available

I tried other movies, other filter combination, restart the PC.... never change!!!!!!!!

I have to consider also that, assuming to do it, I must recompress again after filtering......

I suppose I'm doing something wrong..

Could some people help me???? which is the right way to filter avi with Virtualdub??

thank's a lot in advance for cooperation

Ciao from Italian friend

VERY IMPORTANT, VIRTUALDUB BUG!!!!! OR WHAT??!!??!

If I do:

1 - capture, I divide video and audio
2 - xvid compress + audio compressed
3 - split a little preview file from xvid
4 - open preview file (with no audio)
5 - full processing mode
6 - filter (I add a filter set)
7 - compress (xvid 2 pass)
8 - save avi pass 1 (DON'T RUN THIS JOB)
9 - save avi pass 2 (DON'T RUN THIS JOB)
10 - job control

Job 1 (pass 1) will be done
Job 2 (pass 2) NO

virtualdub stay blocked to 1%, no crash, no windows instable, simply stopped "in progress".

I tried several time waiting many time too, always the same result.

virtualdub DON'T process the second pass if "I use filters" and I want "2 pass xvid recompress" a file already made in "2 pass xvid codec" before. All happens without "crash".

Is it a Bug????????? or what????

P.S. There is no problem if I do same thing but recompressing in 1 CBR pass only.

ciao

ehm...You are really getting something wrong here.
When you apply filters in VirtualDub, you always have to recompress the video! It's not possible to alter the frames in the video directly (at least with compressed files). :-)
Don't encode your video in XviD before you have set all your filters!

So, my suggestion for making your files would be:
1. Capture your video with full resolution and good quality with a codec like Picvideo MJPEG, which you already use (another possibility would be a lossless codec like HuffYUV). You could also try to capture in YUY2 colorspace (or even YUV12).
2. Open the file in VirtualDub, apply your filter chain (in Full Processing Mode) with deinterlacing, resizing etc., and choose the video codec (like DivX or XviD) - and audio codec, too.
3. Wait until VirtualDub is done...and voilą: There is your file - filtered and with "normal" size.

By the way: If you want to use the VirtualDub filters, try at least some advanced filters. For example, the "Smart Deinterlace Filter" by Donald Graft is way better than the internal deinterlace filter.

If you want to know more about capturing - there are a lot of guides dealing with this topic. The Capture Guide (http://www.doom9.org/capture/start.html) at Doom9, for example, should be quite useful.

Thank's a lot Syncroniza

I finaly have understood now, just latest question

I'm absolutely forced to use resize filter if I want to take some size of original one?

If you want to keep the captured resolution, you don't need a resize filter, of course. But you have to resize, for example, if you are capturing in 768x576 and you want your video in 640x480 in the end. In this case, you (normally) set the resizing as last step in the filter chain (...and keep the correct aspect ratio!).

But again: Take a look into a capture guide and/or FAQ, as this is already explained there. And if you have some further questions about capturing, I would recommend that you post into the corresponding "Capturing video"-Forum.
