hi all,

my specs: Athlon 2000, 256 RAM, 80GB HD, Windows XP Pro SP1 clean and updated, lastest gknot (28.5.2), divx 5.05, avisyth is ok, only one dll, etc ;)

(i know this is not a gknot problem, but i don't know where to post this, and how is gknot related...)

houston, i have a problem ;) : sometimes at the beggining of the 1st pass and sometimes at half of 1st pass VirtualDubMod hangs

i am using the 0.28.5 rip pack, so i don't know what is going on...

sound decodes ok, and also the credits do ok, but after the 1st pass starts, i got a memory error, or simply it shows some other error, sometimes is avisynth and sometimes virtualdubmod

my memory is ok (tested) also my cpu and hardware, i have plenty of free hard disk, my xp installation is clean (no games, adware, etc)

i tried to uninstall, clean all, and reinstall, also tried other movies, but i got constant erratic errors after 1st pass starts

sometimes (aprox 10%) the movies do ok, and gordian knot ends gracefully

is anyone having these errors?
anyone could tell me how could i know WHAT is going on?
before that, i sucessfully encode more than 100 movies with my old win98se and oldest gknot (0.27)

thanks all!

"Sounds" like a heat related problem. The reason? The problems do not occur at the same position in the encode.

Encoding applications, like VdubMod, produce more CPU heat than most anything else you'll run on a PC. And that can heat can overrun the capacity of the airflow / fans in your PC.

I know you say the hardware is OK, but if you are overclocking the AMD cpu (FSB, multiplier, etc.), then turn it off and reset the AMD to factory spec. If you're not overclocking, you can add another fan (or two) to your PC case, and/or remove the cover to improve airflow and cooling.

There are motherboard monitors that can report temperatures from all thermistors on your MB, there are also CPU stress tests such as Prime95 that can you can run while monitoring the CPU and MB temperatures.

Of course, VdubMod will stress the CPU like Prime95, the only reasons to use a tool like Prime95 would be to eliminate a software bug in the encoding suite as a possible culprit, and Prime95 will run until you turn it off. VdubMod will stop at the end of an encoding pass.

I noticed that BeSweet was causing me thermal problems that revealed themselves much faster than thermal problems due to GordianKnot encoding via VirtualDub variants. I could play Unreal tournament 2003 and run torture tests but Besweet encoding to ogg is the killer application. I now have a northbrige/South bridge heatsinks on the motherboard. This solved all my problems but one must take into account the ambient air temperature when operating a computer. If the air you use to cool you PC is at 30 degC (90F) then it might be a good idea to even underclock if there is no need for speed such as browsing the web. It takes a little experimentation to find out what you can get away with.
