I have an avi file and i want to convert it so i can put it on a dvd +r. Without using CCE, is there a way to convert it?

There are some very good guides available for this. Probably the best tool would be TMPGEnc, but there are others.
Use the built in settings defaults for DVD in TMPGEnc, load your AVI, and let it run.

Don't do it that way!!
TMPGEnc struggles with audio within an AVI.. instead first use virtualdub or goldwave to rip the audio to wav, and select the wav as the audio source in TMPG.. then let it run :D

Good clarification Bippy! It is always better to use elemental streams anyway, although I have usually not had as much problems as you seem to have with using original avi's.

Usually avi's use mp3 audio, which tmpgenc doesn't like, so the audio is out of sync (If you load the avi into virtualdub it'll come up with an error!!)
also you may as well convert the audio to ac3 anyway for better compatability :D
