I bought the yamakawa dvd-218 because dvdrhelp listed it as compatible with svcd.It wont play the svcd mpeg2 files I created with eazyvcd unless I do the header trick.Did they mean it plays commercial svcd's and if I want to burn my own will I have to do header trick? I'm using nero-burning rom. The svcd plays fine on my computer with powerdvd.
Is there any freeware that does what TMPGEnc does? or will I need to buy it to continue burning svcd's after trial period

have you tryd doing a noprmal VCD to play in your DVD player. this can be a test to see if your DVD player plays VCDs or if it plays Burnt cd's.
a friend of mine has a dvd player and it only plays the gold cdR/W disks. sadly if your player doesn't play burnt CDs (which is the case with some) then your only option is to take it back to the store and get a refund or see if you can exchange it for annother model saying it is for "home movies" and take a home movie on SVCD format to the store to test in a player or two.

This link (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdmedia/) will take you to an interface where you can find which media are compatible with your standalone player. Your player may be one of the models that's finicky about which brands of media are used......burp! :) Some models are known to be particularly fussy over which RWable's that they'll accept.... if this scenario applies to your problem?

There is also the media matrix right on the Yamakawa site :): http://www.yamakawa.de/produkte/media_matrix_usa.htm .
Also, I just heard of eazyvcd for the first time, maybe it is the cause of your problems? Try the svcd images available to verify your player supports svcd (the manufacturer certainly says so).
