I know this may fall under subtitling but since I do not know the first thing about DVD ripping...or anything about DVD's other than how to play them!

I any case, I recently bought a Japanese anime DVD and realised that as each episode went on the subtitle quality decreases and decreases until sentence have names translated or words that could have been better used. I know the basic translations, I was just wondering if it is possible to re-subtitle a DVD using the existing subtitles?

The DVD is Naruto, Part 1.

If it wouldn't be too hard someone tell me if it is possible, and if so kindly point me in the right direction?

Thank you very much.

Welcome to Doom9's forum!

It is possible. The actual process will vary depending upon your final format (DVD, (S)VCD, AVI...) but there are tools and procedures that can help.

Doom9's has various DVD backup guides that discuss subtitling, and he has collected those sections together for those of us who already have comfort with video transcoding. The collection is together in a web page he calls Subtitling guides (http://www.doom9.org/subtitle_guides.htm). Taken out of context, they may look complicated to the uninitiated.

In brief: DVD subtitles streams are stored in "bitmap" form -- pictures of text. To edit them, they 1) first need to be extracted from the DVD, then 2) they need to be converted to text, and then 3) they can be edited. From that point forward, your choices and procedures will vary depending upon your intended video format.

I (or others) could recommend a variety of tools for subtitle conversions, subtitle text editors, and the like. But you said you don't know "anything about DVDs," nor have you described your backup format or procedures you're currently using (if any), and I could send you down the wrong path, or a more complicated one. So I'm hesitant to make any recommendations. The editing of subtitles is actually a hobby of a number of people on the forum, so expertise is available to you ... when you're already comfortable with DVD backup, and feel you're ready to do subtitle magic.

If you're at all interested in DVD backup, I recommend starting with Doom9's DVD Basics (http://www.doom9.org/dvd-basics.htm) guides. After reading through that section, you'll certainly know a lot more.

Thank you very much, I am very glad it is possible. I read a few of the tutorials and it seems fairly easy to understand (I am very much so a "computer person". Thank you for helping me!
