'avi' is not a 5-channel sound format, it is a container. It is probably already Dolby Digital (AC3) muxed into the AVI. Just demux it with VDubMod. If it's not AC3, tell us how you encoded/muxed it. If you didn't encode it, you're probably treading very close to rule 6.

i used vdub and did a direct stream copy and the file was
5channel 48000hz

and the file size is 171mb

i also saved wav as..... in vdub

but i renamed it to .ac3

what else do i have to do ?

i can send yuo the file if u private message me?

To make it a 100% correct AC3, the WAV headers have to be stripped away. VirtualdubMod will do this if i can remember correct.

Go to "Streams" -> "Stream list" -> press "Demux". That's it.
anyway, there's a help file included in VirtualDubMod.
And AFAIK you can't encode 5.1ch sound in TMPGEnc. You may use MPEG-2 Audio Multichannel Encoder included in DVD2SVCD (but first you should decode it to PCM wav in BeSweet or HeadAC3he).

You can mux ac3 in Tmpgenc. I don't know if the latest version of Vdubmod has corrected this issue, but it sometimes doesn't write the header correctly. You might need to pass the Demuxed ac3 file through besliced to correct the header.

is ac3 compatible with SVCD?

it is not possible at all. you have to transcode ac3 to mp2.

@sycho: yeah, i know. just wanted to draw attention that we are talking about SVCD.

this might work, just make an ac3 *.wav and mux it with the *.mpg, just force your amplifier to decode dolby digital, if it has an input override, i thing yamaha's have them
