View Full Version : Getting the money to those that deserve it

This rather long (sorry) post is about something that bothers me and I wonder if something can be done about it. Maybe this is not the right place for it, but I know it'll be most read here ;-) Anyway, on to my rant.

Lately, I see more and more people asking for donations on their site. I think this is a good thing. After all, most of these people have costs while giving (much of) their spare time by either helping in the forums or making software. However -imho- I don't see it as a very effective way to get some money. I think there's a better way. It's a bit like having your own doom9-RIAA! LOL Read on...

What if there would be a single, general, 'doom9-donation-fund' (ddf) to which all that wish to do so, could donate money through Pay Pal or the like. Then, the money in this ddf is distributed to all software-authors that have 'joined'.

Now, any author could apply to join this ddf by submitting his/her software through the usual ways, mostly the doom9 forum I guess. Doom9 would than place this 'applicant' on a designated page of the site. Visitors of the doom9 site would then have to vote for this author's software and give a rating, based on their experience with the software. When the author receives a certain amount of points'n'votes, he is accepted into the fund.

Next, assuming people would actually donate some money, the funds would have to be devided in a fair way. The fairest way in my mind would be, again, by a user-rating system. This means that when someone would want to donate money, he/she would go to the donation page where all the softwares/authors are listed. There, he/she would give one or all a rating according to their liking and than make their donation. Of course, this list could also contain doom9 and the forum moderators. In this way, one donation will be split according to the rating each person receives. Perhaps doom9 could get a fixed percentage, for hosting it all ;-)

Now why, you might ask, would this work better than each to his own?
- Well first of all, lots of people come to doom9. No author alone attracts the number of visitors doom9 does, especially because most softwares can be dl'd from his site.
- Secondly, all these visitors could now donate not just to one or some, but to all contributors here at once. They would not need to go to different sites, make separate donations, go through all the pages and forms and stuff like that. Just one donation for all.
- Thirdly, when one makes a donation, Pay Pal and the likes will subtract a commission from the donated amount. If someone donates to five people, he would pay this commission five times. However, in this scheme, he would only pay this commision once and still get his donation to all five. So, more money goes to the authors.
- Fourthly, there may be contributors who don't have their own site and/or the knowledge to set up their own Pay Pal account. This way these contributors would also get a fair share for their efforts. The same applies of course for the forum moderators.
- Lastly, it is a way to say thank you to all who contribute at once, for all of their efforts through the ratings.

Now of course I realise that to be able to do this, many many things would have to be organised and carried out before it would work. But I know that there are many people here with many talents who can help to set this up in a way that it works well. And of course the rules and all that stuff would have to be decided and refined right here in the forum first. And the whole thing would have to be in an open fashion, so that anybody can join, leave, donate or view the ratings. et cetera.

Anyway, I'm just curious if there are other people here that think this is a good idea and would like to help set this up.

I can understand where your coming from....but; ;)

1) The people that help here (with software, etc) don't want/need donations, if they did they would ask or release it as shareware (which isn't what this forum is about).

1.5) Also most would not accept it. Neuron2 would never accept donations (I remember DVD2SVCD offering to donate...and Donald refusing etc...trbarry mentions in his source code that he doesn't want donations but believes in Philanthropyware, etc)

2) Creating software or helping in the forum doesn't cost money (only time). But doom9 himself (and Swede) has to spend money directly or indirectly to keep the site going. So I believe it is them that deserve it the most...

I hope that makes sense :)

Well, I still think it's a good idea, so I'm compelled to reply ;-)

Hmmm. OK, I certainly did not mean it as a commercial initiative like sharware, but on a voluntary basis like the existing donations are.

1.5) Also most would not accept it. Neuron2 would never accept donations (I remember DVD2SVCD offering to donate...and Donald refusing etc...trbarry mentions in his source code that he doesn't want donations but believes in Philanthropyware, etc)

You know this from some (or many?) of the people here, but - and I don't mean to be rude - do you know this to be a fact for the majority? I would sure like to see some more reactions here. :-)

I don't doubt that for a minute. But time can be costly and money is also a way to appreciate someone (not always though). And a scheme like this would also benefit doom9 and Swede, would'nt it?

All I'm saying is, I think we could do more this way to appreciate those who contribute most in this community. No?

I wasn't saying yours was necessarily a bad idea, I was just giving reasons as to why it won't happen ;)

Oh, and I don't know it for a fact, but being someone thats contributed to the forum enough (hit 2000 posts today, mpeg2dec3, xvid, etc) I know most of the team and how they think :) ( I like to think anyway )

But it's nice for you to think about the people on the forum. I think all the appreciation we look for is for people to follow the rules. That would be enough (and worth more than money ;) )

Take Care,
-Nic

This site has 35K+ registered users and growing. I ignore how many are not active anymore. Anyway, 1 dolar per year per registered user would be a whole bunch of money to help mantaining and improving this site.

I don't think anybody who's been here would question US$1 per year being too much (It's a symbolic figure, not the value I attribute to this, just in case).

A big problem is that collecting such small amounts of money is not easy with current online payment systems.

A good way to enforce the rules would be, as in real life, stablish fines for trespassers after the first moral sanctions have been applied :D

@r6d2
That's exactly what I mean! One or maybe two dollars per person would do the trick. You're right about the small amounts on payment systems though.

On the other hand, when dealing with these small amounts of money, sending cash is a good alternative since the risk is very low. The problem with that would be that I don't think Doom9 wants to put his address up here for people to send their money to. So we'd need someone whose willing to put his address here AND whom can be trusted to not take off with the loot! LOL

Perhaps anyone here knows a way to organise a foundation or whatever, that has a real post address to send money to, but at the same time will maintain doom9's (and others) anonimity?

We can use mine! :D

Seriously, why do you think there is a particular anonimity effort from Doom9 and others? I mean besides the normal anonimity you get on the net anyway?

Well, I'm not sure but I seem to remember from posts here since long ago that Doom9 is especially keen on preserving that anonimity. I can remember a thread where on the bases of his German language skills it was suggested he resided in Germany. This led to some "energetic" reactions which all pointed to a special effort to keep this anonimity as "high" as possible.

The reason for this was (suggested) possible retaliations by RIAA/MPAA and the like. And please don't take this as me saying that what's done here and the softs provided here are illegal. My guess is Doom9 wants to be "better safe than sorry".

Or, maybe I just misinterpreted those threads. ;-)

I missed that thread. I'm quite new here.

Reasonable, and I agree with that. (That's why I'm based in Voyager II :))

Anyway, anonimity on the net is just a matter of time and money. If someone is going after you, you'll get caught unless you use FreeNet or other comparable technology.

BTW, my guess is that Doom9 is based in Mesquite, Texas, working for Id Software and developing the upcoming Doom IX series games software. :D
