How to squeez PAL to NTSC in one DVD-R?
How to reduce m2v file size to fit one DVD-R?

I am trying to encode a DVD PAL to DVD NTSC.
The length of the PAL movie is 2 hours 14 minutes.

The original PAL DVD is in one DVD-5 single layer disc ripped to 4.83GB. The video is PAL interlace, 4:3, 625 line (704x576)

I use TMPGenc to encode output movie.m2v size is 5.998 GB.
That is too big for one single DVD-R disc.

The TMPGenc setting is:
704x480 NTSC
Frame rate = 23.976
Automatic VBR
DC component precision: 8 bits
Motion search precision: Motion Estimate Search (fast)

What can I do to reduce file size and maintain reasonable good quality picture?
Is there anyway I can make this NTSC DVD similar to the original PAL DVD source?

Limit the bitrate on the vbr

Can you please tell me how to limit bitrate at VBR?

In TMPGenc, only CBR is allow to set bitrate limit.

All other bitrate control mode do not allow bitrate limit. Correct?

In the settings, under the video tab, just set rate control mode to 2-pass VBR(VBR). Then just adjust your bitrate accordingly.

Well, it works. The 2 Pass VBR bitrate setting average 4400, max 9570, min 2000. Motion Search Precision is : high quality (slow). The total authored size is 4.696GB. It takes 34+ hours. Anyway to make it better and faster?

You are using the arguably best motion estimation method, which is slow, but 34 hours seems too much! Are you doing any heavy filtering?

On my Celeron 1.7+512MB I get to encode a 704x480 2 hour movie in about 8 hours.

Anyway, just in case you I misundertood your original posting, the best way to make the size predictable to suit your needs is adjusting the average BR, not the min and max. Leave them as they are and use a bitrate calculator to get the propper average BR.

Yes, understood the average VBR is key.

How does the Hollywood studio professional do it?
Any MPEG2 encoding accelerator?

Suppose you're not doing AviSynth filters either. Still seems too slow. Your system is modest, but reasonable. Sorry, no clue. But search for "dmafix.exe" and read that thread. Maybe you're having problems with your DMA IDE settings.

I guess they don't use off line encoding tools. They use hardware systems which encode on the fly.

You may try CCE. Is quite faster and gives arguable similar results.
