I'm currently running gknot 0.28.5 I've searched the forum and read the guides and I'm still not clear exactly how to correctly set the compressibility settings to meet my needs. My goal is to rip all of my dvd's to a HD for playback in a home theater, file size is not that important but quality is. I keep the ac3 audio and just mux it back in. I try to maintain the highest resolution and utilize smartcrop and do 2 pass divx5 encoding.

I run a compressibility check on all rips and change the file size till I get 75% in the compressibility box, I've recently dropped to 70% with excellent results.

How low can I go percentage wise and still maintain excellent results. One of the guides states to stay above .2 in the Bits/(Pixel*Frame) but if I do that the % will drop. Currently I'm doing Anna and the King, which has the following from comp test:
Bits/pixel 0.323 |70% |of 0.461 Compessibility Test. The resolution is 704x288

I do not want to have to examine every encoding that I do, therefore what is the best percentage to go with?

Thanks in advance, GKNOT RULES!!!

Hi,

To stay above 60% of the comp test is safe.
One of the guides states to stay above .2 in the Bits/(Pixel*Frame) but if I do that the % will drop. I donīt understand what you mean: how can the % drop if you stay above .2?
In any case, I believe the % of the comp test is more reliable than the absolute Bits/(Pixel*Frame) value.
Hope this helps. If not, please ask again.

what counts is the percent value, the outcome depends heavy on the movie and the codec settings. I happen to see blocks even at 75% at fast moving sceenes so I recommend to use 80% but in any case you have to make your own test and experience to find the optimal settings for your personal demands

Anything above 70% is excellent quality. I like to shoot for above 75% (2 CD rips with the original AC3 track); if you want quality, I wouldn't go below 75%. However, you said size is not an issue, so do 1-pass quality-based encodes @ quantizer 1; this will yield the best quality from DivX. However, you might have a few files close to the size of the original DVD.

Thanks, I'll continue to go between 70 and 75%

I may experiment with 65 to 70% at some point.

Again, thanks

Yap, when filesize is not an issue quality based mode should be your choice... (needs less time than an 2Pass encode) ;)

But why quantizer 1 ???
I think the quality gain from quant. 2 to quant. 1 is near like un-noticeable, so quant 2 would be enough... !?!
