movie/windows on TV

Hi

I'm happily playing my divx movies on my TV via the TV out on my laptop but the windows desktop looks really bad !

I'm about to buy a new pc and I would like to have the option of presenting the windows desktop onto my tv ( 32 inch widescreen ). Does anyone have experience on getting a decent picture on a TV set. I thinking there may be gizmo/graphics card that does something clever and gives me a reasonable picture

Hi,

From my own experience each TV-Out is totally different. Also, you may get various picture quality levels on different TV sets. It is said that Matrox cards have best picture quality but I haven't seen any yet so I can't really tell :rolleyes:

Both ATI and NVIDIA give me decent quality ... enough to watch movies but I wouldn't dare to use it for regular "Windows work".

I'm using a S-video connection from a ATI Mobility 4 to a 27" Sony WEGA and the picture is very clear; text is readable and if necessary, I could do normal tasks with the TV as a monitor. I'd check the quality of your cable, TV settings (turn off any sharpening effects), and check the options for using the TV on your computer (the ATI card has quite a few). I found that turning off all sharpening, dot crawl reducers, etc etc made the picture/text much easier to read).

I got a Geforce4 Ti 4800 SE, and there is an option to select an output device for the aditional screen; Analog Display, TV, and Digital Display. I have never tried it, so I can't tell you if it will look any better. If you are going to buy a new computer anyway, just check that out if you want.
