View Full Version : VDub & VDubMod report errors differently

I’ve joined 2 mpg-1 files with VCDCutter 4.04, then, preparatory to encoding into DivX format (I know that VCD-to-DivX isn’t a great idea!), I opened it with VDub 1.5.4. A tiny window started “MPEG Import Filter: Parsing Interleaved MPEG File” which soon (a little before halfway) stopped with an error message: “MPEG Import Filter: packet sync error on packet stream (28f75cc0)”.

At that point I ran VCDGear MPEG – MPEG on my source file to fix mpeg errors, and NO ERRORS WERE REPORTED.

Then I tried VDubMod 1.5.1 (based on VDub 1.5.1), which had NO TOUBLE IN PARSING INTERLEAVED MPEG-1 FILE, and two identical frames of the file opened side by side.

I did 'Video > Scan video stream for errors', AND IT WAS OK.

After initial settings defined (THERE'S NO WAY I COULD DEFINE AUDIO COMPRESSION PREFERENCES IN VDubMod) I started saving avi, and a VDubMod Stat window opened, and main VDubMod window started showing input and output videos. The projected file size was around 2.23 GB ! (Probably because of the audio)

At 5:11 minutes came: “VirtualDub Error: MPEG-1 audio decode error: incomplete frame.”

Of course there are some mistakes I am making somewhere. Time you pros told me. And also PLEASE ADVISE HOW BEST TO CORRECT DISTURBED MPEG-1 and .vob files. Thanks.

AFAIK, VirtualDubMod is using my MPEG-2 code, which is more tolerant about errors in the video stream than the original code. However, the audio is still handled by VirtualDub's original decoder (called "Priss"), and she is very picky.

Both the original VirtualDub and my mod (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/) allow you to set the error mode in the Audio menu. I don't know if VirtualDubMod has that, but if so you can try setting it to "Decode even if the result may be garbled."

Another thing you might try if you use my mod: Check "popup extended open options" when you open the MPEG, then another dialog will appear, where you can check "allow direct audio stream copy." This will bypass Priss and write the MPEG audio directly into the AVI. It's sort of an experimental feature, though, and I can't guarantee that it will work, or that the resulting AVI will be playable.

If all else fails, use TMPGEnc's tools to demultiplex the video and audio, reencode them separately with VirtualDubMod and BeSweet, then mux them back together with VirtualDubMod.

Thanks, fcchandler.

I've just downloaded your VirtualDubMPEG2-ac3.zip, and will work with it shortly.

TMPGEnc, however, quits suddenly about halfway wile demuxing the VIDEO. Probably some error in the video stream, too.

Thanks again.
