I'm thinking of buying a new computer and therefore would like to use my old one as a standalone DVD/divx/mp3 player together with my TV and stereo system. I have a LiteOn DVD drive in it now, but I will be moving that into the new computer so I'll need a new DVD-drive for the old one. The LiteOn is great for ripping and reading data DVD's but for the standalone I would like one that :

1. Isn't to noisy, the LiteOn sounds like a jet taking off sometimes. I hate watching movies from the LiteOn because of this.
2. Can read cdr's everytime. The LiteOn has many problems with this.
3. Doesn't get to warm.
4. Isn't to expensive (around 400kr = 50-60$ would be ok)
5. If possible be available in gray as I will be painting the standalone this colour (this is not at priority though).

If anyone has any suggestions I would be very gratefull as the sites I've searched don't realy tell how the drives sold perform these tasks, so I guess it comes down to people having experience with different drives. Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone with suggestions :-)

I would suggest a Toshiba 1612 or 1712. Both very silent. There is even a special Firmware available that slows the drive down for cd and dvd reading. (originally from the kiss hardware player wich uses a 1612/1712)

Pioneers are good as well, although a bit noisier than the Toshibas. I'm a fan of slot loading drives, though ;).

hi,

i've got an ASUS DVD-E616 dvd-drive and i'm very satisfied. it's silent when reading movies off of cds/dvds, has no problems at all with my cd-r/rws and is fast, too.
i don't know how warm it gets, but i don't think it's warmer than the average of dvd-drives.
i don't know the actual price, but when i bought it, it cost me around 85€.

if you want the exact colour you paint your pc with, just paint your dvd-drive, too. it's not too hard to do.

The 1612 is BETTER tahn the 1712,
Ive read it some time ago when I want to buy a new DVD-Rom... (1612 has more chache than the 1712). ;)

Now I have the 1612 for 1/2 year and Im very happy with it. :)

Silent... Good reading error protection... What want you more ???

But its hard to find one... (because its a little bit outdated "the modell, not the tech it uses").

So I would prefeer the 1612... When you be able to get one... :D
