Hey everybody. Newbie seeking answers.

Hey folks. I was linked to these forums via another. I wanted to know if there's a way to rip DVDs into one file (mpeg or avi.) I dled DVD Decrypter, but I end up with HUGE files (4 gigs plus) and they're broken up as VOBs. Is there a way to get good quality, but reasonable filesize rips in an unbroken sequence? If I can get a movie down to 1 gig each, that'd be awesome! If anybody knows, the good people at Doom9 do! :D Thanks in advance everybody!

O_o Forgive me. I'm just trying to get the hang of things. Have to apologize again....what am I looking for at that link? I can't seem to find a DVD to Mpeg/Avi guide. As I explained, I'm still a noob at these things. ^_^;

the first question you have to answer is, if you have a standalone dvd player and if you want to watch your movies on this standalone
(you have to know that 1cd rips playable with a normal standalone will have lower quality than 1cd rips not playable)

You have to choose which codec you want to use (DivX 3.11, DivX 5, XviD).
As you are new to this, I'd recommend DivX 5 (maybe XviD).

After you've chosen the codec, you will get to the guide. The guide is using "Gordian Knot" (links are in the guide) to make conversion easier.

Follow the guide, and if you have a problem with it post the question in the "Newbie" section of this forum.

you cant watch divx or xvid movies on a normal standalone dvd player, that's why i asked about that...

You can't directly "rip" those vob files to an .avi or .mpeg file. You need to copy the vob files from your DVD to your hard drive, THEN use the data in the DVD's vob files to encode a compressed .avi or .mpeg file with the smaller size you desire.

I would suggest starting off with the guide at http://www.dvdrhelp.com/sefy/?id=ClassicalGuide.html and play around with Super Video CD (MPEG2) encoding. This is where I started at first, and you should get a good introduction into the world of DVD backups. DivX gives you better quality but the Doom9 guide is WAY too much for a newbie to handle.
