View Full Version : VCD audio sampling rate?

I have been trying to author a DVD, using SpruceUp(want to put a couple of VDC movies into a DVD, with a menu for selecting anyone of them).

When I encoded the VCD movies I did it downsampling audio from 48000 to 44100Hz. The result movie plays nicely on my DVD player (as well as in my computer).

But when I tried to author a DVD, SpruceUp doesn't let me to add any movies. It complains that audio is not compatible. That it will only accept audio sampled at 48000Hz.

My cuestion is: Why do we have to downsample from 48000 to 44100HZ?. Is there any sound reason for doing so?.

I've read that we need to do it because, in this way, we make computer compatible VCD (something to do with some soundcards not being able to reproduce 48000Hz soud...; that's not my case, as I can play that kind of frecuency).

Could anybody enlighten me on this subject.

Remember tha I am a raw beginner.

Thanks

(S)VCD specifications require 44.1 KHz audio, it has nothing to do with your computer.

as kpex suggested its different formats that require different sampling rates.

vcd, svcd etc demand 44.1khz, whereas dvd demands 48khz. It as simple as this.

All depend to what u r going to do. vcd or dvd disc.

It also depends on your dvd player... my toshiba plays 48khz xvcd and xsvcd files perfectly. The resulting disc will be out of spec, but being that dvd players are made primarily for playing back 48khz audio on dvds theres a good chance that most will play them when attached to a vcd as well, but results vary between players.
