1-2FPS encoding since installing Koepi 24062003-1

i have jumped from 25-40 FPS 2-pass encoding to 1-2 FPS 2-pass encoding

it seemed to coincide with installing the Koepi 24062003-1 Xvid binary.
Not sure if this is what has caused it or maybe i am not using it right. I formerly had uManics binary installed.

i had the default set-up to start with, with Qpel and Chroma. Had Search at 6.

then i enabled VHQ-4 and B-frames.
But this didnt make a difference to the encoding speed.
encoding with basic/light settings hasnt made a difference.


I have since re-installed uManics and Nic's binary and also tried using VD (rather then VDMod) nothing makes a difference.

the Null Speed test seems to think i should be getting up over 30fps, but when it comes to actually encoding it drops.

Using VDMod and doing Audio seperately.

system:
1700+ @ 2.1ghz (STABLE)
190FSB sync (768mb's) CL2.5

If you've installed another build like mine, and then hit Load Defaults and you still have slower encoding speed than normal...then thats very strange and doesn't sound the fault of the codec.

i missed that, i'll give that a try
although i basicly cut it back to defaults in my tests, improved somewhat (~11fps) but nothing like i used to get, even with video footage i have gotten +30fps on before with Xvid.

Probably my windows gone stoopid.

PS how do u del/remove xvid.ax ?
i unregistered it, but still wouldnt go, renaming was the only way (besides trying safe mode)

if explorer.exe (i.e. windows) previews an XviD file, then xvid.ax is hard to get away. Always the easiest bet, is to restart your computer and then try and remove filters.
(You can use task manager to kill and then reload explorer.exe as well, then unregister and delete xvid.ax. You don't have to delete it though, unregistering it will make it harmless)

i managed to install different binaries by renaming the existing xvid.ax coz all installs failed at the copying of xvid.ax file.

so i have an unregistered xvidax.old file in my system32 dir

some seriously wrong,
my 22+ hr 2-pass encode (normally takes 2 hrs for same length and type of film) ended up being 501mb's (i normally hit it very close to 700, like 701mb etc)

and further more the file wont play, does render, but doesnt advance past the first (i assume) black frame, and errors if i try and seek anywhere

time to start deleting and re-installing and mabe even re-image my boot partition.

You have some massive OC on your system. I would suggest that you back off the settings a bit (and stress test with something like Prime95)

yeah its Prime stabe, 3D Mark stable, Burn CPU stable, and all at once ;)

in fact its good for 2.3ghz but i hate the loud fan noise, at 2.1 i can run fans on low :D

I had the same problem, and it was a bug in the VHQ code, or something else (the word VHQ just pops up in my mind) for that release if I'm not mistaken - mind you this was a self-compiled build of the CVS. Luminance and saturation would be fine, but the hues were as if taken from a TV colour bar picture. Also, the version of ffdshow with Nimo's Codec pack can make some videos appear bad (or maybe it was another decompressor? I just remember it being something to do with Nimo's), so it's preferable to get a copy by itself, or build it yourself.

By the way, T-Bred B? Nice overclock you have there :D

Vhq-4 takes alot longer to do encodes. Try Vhq-1. I started out using vhq-4 but it took all freakin night, even on a p4 3 gig machine, but now that i switched to vhq-1, the same encode takes like 2, 3 hours tops. I also use h.263, not sure if that affects encoding times at all.

I'm having the exact same speed problem. The difference is that I didn't use any other binaries. (I mean, I've just formatted my Windows partition). I'm using the same release.

My PC is a 2.0Ghz and 512Mb of RAM. ;)

Um... Koepi has stated MANY times that VHQ is SLOW. That's why VHQ4 is super slow. It trades a ton of time for better quality and it's up to you whether you think it's worth it.

for most vhq1 should be enough, and if you got more time step it up to 4. that is if you feel the 1-2% improvement increase is worth it.

yeah it seems VHQ is the most guilty when it comes to slowing down encoding,
i mean i found dropping B-frames helped and then dropping back the motion search precision and then dropping the filters helped to
back to a basic config i was encoding at 30fps +
but dropping back VHQ from 4 to 1 has seen encoding go from 2fps to 8fps

so it does seem to have the single most effect on encoding times

NB this is where installing this binary slowed me, the uManic Feb build i had didnt have VHQ etc options thus encoded faster.

I was thinking of getting a 1700+ as an "upgrade" for my 2000+, heh :) I hear they can get 2.2 on air alone, but I have a heat problem (for whatever reason, I have 2 case fans and a frickin' loud Volcano 9), so overclocking isn't something I exactly want to do right now :devil:

Yeah, volcano 9, arctic silver, I heard that it's a good cooler but loud. I know about the palominos being hotter... What do you use? Is it quiet and efficient? :D

i use nothing less then an SLK-800
coupled with the ThermalTake Smart Fan II so i can adjust to the speed i need (mostly only need low) and at 80mm its not a high pitch, deeper sound, and low audible level = happy me and CPU ! :D
