Audio Sync

When capturing from VHS my auido is always out-of-sync, even with VirtualDub VCR which claims to fix it. Is there a method of determining the audio delay needed in order to "Re-Sync" the two?
Guesswork isn't too effective.

I had similar problems. If there is much framedrop, desync is inevitable. You can't solve it via some delay adjusting.

Best thing is using BT Tweaker, if you have BT 8x8 based capture card. It will decrease framedrop when you cut bottom part of picture with it (not same as crop).

Of course that adjusting framerate to much audio-video duration will not fix it for whole shot, because framedrop occurs not steady.

Thanks for the tips but the problem isn't due to framedrops, I capture with Huffyuv and rarely ever get any dropped frames. Maybe 1 every half hour.

Fact that V Dub VCR doesn't reports dropped frames doesn't mean that it hasn't them. It's regardless what codec you use - except if huffyuv is too demanding for your hardware.
If desync occurs by lower res capture too, then problem is in VHS signal, certainly.

I tried lowering the resoulution and I think the desync was reduced somwhat, but there was still some. When capturing in Huffyuv Vdub typically reports only 30% CPU usage (P4 2.66), I have a 7200 rpm HDD and 768MB of RAM. Would framedrops still occur? And is there a way to determine the required delay to compensate?

try capturing audio at 44khz and 48khz

you might want to try Virtual VCR as well.

I fiddled with the audio delay some more and I have it pretty close, it's not perfect but quite watchable. I have 2 other problems with my converting process.

1. I have set up the filters I want in Vdub and I want to frameserve to TMPG, will Vdub serve filtered frames or the originals?

2. In order to fit 1 tape onto a DVD, I need a bitrate of 3923kb\s once I go under the 4000 mark TMPG suggests a resolution of 352X576 instead of 720X576. Which resolution will give me higher quality on a stand-alone player?
