aspi layer unavailable

I'm running windows xp home. I used force aspi 1.7 to instal adaptec aspi 4.60 and it said it installed correctly. When I run smartripper 2.41 or DVDx I get the message no aspi layer available.
When I try to install aspi 4.71 I get the message the NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:054c IP:0106 OP:63 74 79 70 65 choose 'Close to terminate the application.
also DVDx and smartripper still rip the dvd.
do I need to uninstal and reinstal aspi and if so how would I do that?
