XVID and VirtualDub issue?

When I encode a clip in VirtualDub using XVID, I invariably get a "possible livelock, i/o has not cycled for 10 seconds" warning (longer clips usually garner more than 1 warning). I have not encountered this with any other codec (e.g. divx5) - even for the exact same clip.

The warnings have occured with all the versions of XVID, I have tried (currently using Nic's 16/07/2003 binary).

It should be mentioned that the encoding goes just fine (although rather slow - about twice as slow as divx5, even with VHQ disabled).

Is there an issue with XVID and VirtualDub? Or is this just a non-issue (the encoding does complete, it's just rather slow, as I mentioned, and it would be obvious to blame it on the "livelock").

Don't know if this will be of much help, but a guy was having the same problem here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/archive/t162197.html and it was solved.

But his problem seemed to be audio related, and using DivX.

Just my two cents anyway, amazing what happens when you Google an error message :)

Thanks for the effort, but that guys problem is significantly different than mine (and appears to be completely unrelated).

I think I'll try and play around with different xvid builds and see how constant my problem is across various versions.

I thought at one point that the error message might be the cause of the rather long encoding times I was experiencing, but I've now decided that VHQ was the main culprit there. (On a side note, VHQ > 0 (i.e. enabled) causes noticably more "warping" effects than otherwise, although the image quality in other parts of a frame are higher - at least on my current test-video, a skiing video in DV format).
