Interlaced DVD

Forgive me if this is an obvious question, but I've never come across it. I'm converting a VHS to DVD and I need to know if the DVD standard supports interlaced video as I don't want to loose quality by de-interlacing the video un-necessarily. I'm using VirtualDub VCR to capture and TMPGEnc to encode.

Yes, MPEG-2 (the DVD video standard) supports interlaced encoding.
