Capturing Simpsons

Hi,
I wan't to capture all Simpsons-transmissions and I wan't to know which codec should be used. I capture with Huffyuv normally, but when I haven't enough space I switch to MJPEG (Quality 19 or 20). After that I have to reencode the movie.
Which Avisynth-Filter should I use? I think it should be a type of noise filter, and he should standardize the colors, because the simpsons uses a very low number of colors.
And then I should choose a codec. Which is the best for these cartoons? In the forum a lot of people uses the Real-Codec for cartoons.

PS: Does someone knows a good capture-programm? I have a Hauppauge-Card with the BT848-Chip. I use bTV, but it crashes after clicking the stop button after capturing.

hi,
have you seen the capture guide on doom9.org? it describes the whole process (including post processing) fairly well...
if you speak german, you might want to take a look at the german capture guide on doom9.de. It describes the usage of a program called virtualVCR which should definitely simplify the process. i'm currently working on the translation, but unfortunately do not have a lot of time at my hand right now. so it will take a while until everything is set for a new release

Huffyuv (or MJPEG) ar imho the best ways to go.

oh and remember there is no 'best' - this applies to capturing even more than to other conversions :)

first of all i didn't know, but just guessed (see the 'if you...')
second of all, native german speaking persons, myself included, have a special style of english that, if dealt with a lot, can easily be distinguished ;)

But I search optimal settings for cartoons with a low number of colors (like the simpsons)

And I don't know any english speakend people who would call themself Berny. Sounds to much German, Swiss, or Austrian.

@Berny: honestly i've never heard of a way to actually reduce the numbers of colors used in an encode - which doesn't necessarily mean that it's not possible!

This doesn't mean that they are all the same. I only think the languages are similar. Ok. Swiss German is kind of different but we(Switzerland and myself) have to learn German as one of our major classes too.
And please don't gripe about my spelling, my native language isn't enlish (ok, you couldn't know). There is always a beginning and best way to learn something is to practice it.

sorry if it has come around this way. honestly i'm not in a position to pick around in anybodies spelling - well except my own i guess ;)

i've had to go through the process of learning a language several times now and believe me, i do know how tough that can be!

Did you learn enlish in a school, or did you go somewhere to learn it. It would kind of interest me because I went to a different country to learn it. Now I guess it didn't work out very good. :rolleyes:

For The Simpsons I use PicVideo's MJPEG, at quality 18+. I use AviSynth 2.5x, so my choice of filters might be a bit different than you. Generally I use tomsmocomp to deinterlace, then convolution3d MovieHQ or AnimeHQ and resize with bilinear and simple. I've also tried combinations of peachsmoother (with 2.0.8), undot, msmooth, flux, etc., and to be honest, they pretty much all end up looking the same :) Convolution3d works best for my particular satelite stream and is reasonably fast, at least as far as my eyes judge.
