Is IDE Bus faster than FireWire ports?

Trying to decide if a external Firewire DVD Recorder will be just as fast as an Internal IDE version.

Any with technical knowledge or experience in this area please give your feedback?

it's slightly slower iirc. tomshardware or anandtech is the place to check though.

Slightly slower yes, but only the bus Ie firewire cant compete with IDE for speed however the DVD-R drives never even come close to using all the firewire buses existing capacity so it makes no difference

IE if firewire can do about 50 MB/sec and IDE 133 MB/sec but the DVD drive only needs 20 mb/sec (probably much less probably closer to 8 mb/sec) then firewire is more than adequate for your needs!!

The only difference is the price of the drive

On a slightly different note i have 3 firewire devices two hdds and one cdrw and they perform beutifully the hdds only get up to about 32 mb/sec as the interface is to blame there but thats fine for me as for a DVD-R i was looking at at the SONY DRU 510 A firewire one and it looks nice and it seems to be able to write at 4X speeds no probs on the firewire interface

Thank Jeremy, thats what I thought. Bought I wanted to hear from real world users.

Can't wait now to put my DVD writer in my firewire enclosure.

Harddrives hitting 133mb/s is near impossibly beyond the initial burst transmission...

...even good SCSCI drives peak at about 80mb/s

So while you already went ahead I'm just giving some extra blessing ;)
