well depends on what you want... i can't tell you that. I think one of the widest known and used burner is the Pioneer A05, which only supports the 'minus' fraction though. The Sony DRU 500A(X)/UL(X) is rather common too. I for example own a SONY DRU 500 ULX external burner and am totally satisfied with it although i've heard that some people do have problems with it.

Basically the latest generation burners (4x, some dual format) do not differ too much - and what you purchase in the end will most likely depend on the funds you have aswell as the availability in your area.

If you are on a low budget and can't/don't want to buy one of these burners I'd recommend a 2.4x DVD-R burner!

hope this helps

[edit:] somehow when reading through it again it sounded like the a05 is a dual format burner too - which only the new a06 is :)

I can get a Sony DRU 510A for 299.77 at Office Depot
or
Pioneer DVR-AO6 FOR 269.99 AT Best Buy

hmmm... i'd say they are fairly equal from the hardware standpoint. I guess you'll have to decide on a 'package basis'. In other words, take a look at the programs that are included with the burner.
both will have a burning app, a simple dvd auth program, maybe a DLA app and a music player/ripper aswell as a version of PowerDVD or WinDVD.

if the packages are equal i'd go for the pioneer, because of the price advantage!

Well as far as the software package is concerned. I have Nero 6 for burning and my video card is ATI all-in-wonder Radeon 9700 pro, so I never use software DVD player.

ohwell... I guess you should take a look at the authoring apps then, or if this doesn't matter I would go for the ao6

Iirc the DRU-510 can burn DVD+RW at 4X while the pioneer A06 burns them at 2.4x. If u plan on using a lot of rw discs this could save you a lot of time.

also if u plan on using this drive for cd burning sony burns cd-r at 24x and cd-rw at 12x while pioneer burns cd-r at 16x and cd-rw at 10x.
