View Full Version : How do I get 2 DVDs onto 1 CD?

Is there any way that I can get a 2 DVD movie into 1 CD? I'm trying to encode Gangs of New York but it spans across 2 DVDs. I think I'll have to get all the vob files into 1 folder and encode the audio into 1 mp3 file but I'm not sure on how to do that. If someone can point me in the right direction (some kind of guide or something) that would be great.
Thanks,
SiDawg

Hi, sidawg.
2 DVDs will not fit on just one CD, unless you want to use a resolution like 80x80 (which does not exist), or you find a 480 minute CD (which does not exist either). :)
I recommend you to read all of Doom9 guides, particularly the one on DVD2SVCD, which is a very newbie friendly software you can use to learn the basics of this conversions.
Gangs of New York (disc 1 alone) will probably need 3 CDs for a good encode.
Hope this helps.

Hi-
Well, he didn't say what output format he wants. I made what I consider to be a pretty good 2 CD .avi at 640x272 out of it. But not without some serious work. It's pretty challenging. But there's no way I would even consider doing it for 1 CD. It's nearly 3 hours long, full of action, noisy, lots of camera movement, edge enhanced, etc. And of course, encoding to SVCD will require more CDs.
To join the vobs, just make sure they're numbered consecutively. That is, rip the 2 DVDs to separate folders. Then, if those from the first disc are numbered 1 through 5, rename the ones in the second folder 6 through 10 and move them to the first folder.
But be warned. By doing that, there will be audio asynch in the second half of the movie. There are 2 ways around that. One is to cut out 69 frames at the end of part one by using AviSynth's Trim function (probably the easier of the 2 ways). The other is to delay the audio in the second half by 2900 ms.

Why can't he encode both movies at 350MB........ wait that just sounds stupid. Damn man you are not going to get any good looking rip from it. Why not just have 2 CD's like there is 2 DVD's? That's my recomendation.

Just thinking... By your answers (@Hiro2K and @manono), maybe you've got a version which really spans 2 DVD.
In my case the whole movie was on the first disc. The second disc was just the extras.
166 minutes, 16:9, 2 CDs no doubt may give you a good AVI. With SVCD I'd go for 3 anyway.

Hi-
Yes, the R1 version is split among 2 DVDs, with other extras on each one. Since it has a DTS and a DD 5.1 audio track, I guess they didn't think they could fit the whole movie on one DVD with good quality. Encoding each DVD to one CD is one option, but the quality will vary among the 2 CDs. There's a lot more action in the first half of the movie.

Ok, I guess then one good solution for sidawg (is he still around?) is to rip both DVDs (movie PGCs), rename/renumber the VOBs and use DVD2SVCD to get a 3 disc encode.
Though chapters must be fixed manually for the second DVD...
Would this do?

Seems that sidawg, who started this thread, either lost his password or is on vacation. Anyway, just in case he ever comes back, I think the following thread may help him do exactly what he needs, even with chapters:

I used it to encode a 2 DVD movie recently.

I have done exactly what sidawg wants. Region 1 Gangs of New York onto one (CD) using the Kvcd templates on www.kvcd.net. I fit 4-5 movies onto one dvd-r and up to 3 hours onto one cd-r(although they have templates for up to 360 minutes on one cd-r). The learning curve was not that hard for me, but if you've never done anything like this try downloading ACP rom there site. It automates almost everything.

Wow! Di Caprio and Day-Lewis will end up complaining for sharing so little space :D
Seriously, deepest congrats. I've tried Kwag's templates but gave up because of the required time to get the appropriate set up and the actual encode itself.
Congratulations again.

go to the english forum and search for acp. It automates everything for you. even the ripping. Sure it takes a while to encode but the setup/learning curve is simple.
