Can anyone point me to a guide showing me how to convert an avi file to mpeg for dvd burning using DVD2SVCD?
I'm a newbie with this program and am lost.

And as a newbie you should take your time to read the descriptions of each forum so that you post in the correct one. DVD2AVI is a different program (used by DVD2SVCD). I will there for move your post to a better forum, the newbies forum, as I'm not quite sure that DVD2SVCD is your best choise for this task. (But it should work though, I think.)
Choosing a better title for you post wouldn't hurt either. #9 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm)

And I assume you have read everything you could find about DVD2SVCD and DVD-burning at Doom9's homepage (http://www.doom9.org/).

Click on hakko504's link from above. From the homepage, you're path will be....Guides > Format Conversions, with the AVI2SVCD guides listed at the very top of that page. If you would, please edit your thread's title to more closely reflect your task, a well titled thread will enable you to get help more quickly, and also allow the search engine to return a title to future users that will make more sense at first glance. Providing that it should be needed, of course. :)
