Hi.. I'm trying to encode a anime called "Blue Seed" in xvid in combination with avs. I've been working on it for a while now, but can't get one thing fixed. The source(original DVD) has A LOT OF dtc blocks.
I've tried denoising and smoothing using several filters, but no good resultes yet. I've also tried adding noise to reduce it, but also no good results.
I've post here a part of a vob:

You can see the blocks very good when the guy get out of his car(look at his coat).
So who wanna take a shot at it. The ultimate goal would be clean flat areas with sharp and smoothen lines ^_^, but anything better then the source would be good too.
Good luck
Now saving to H:\anime raws-encodes\, I'll look at it later. Thanks :).

good luck MF.. I know your good, so i think this is gonna be a nice challange for you. It would be cool if you would make a filter for it too :D
It's tough to get it fixed without killing details and sharpness. Even if I did that, I still had the same DTC blocks
So anyone else what to take a shot at it?

What about opening it through ffdshow and using its postprocessing?

What do you mean by details? I already have a big denoiser over it so far...
Edit: It's getting pretty annoying already. Unblend won't remove blends, it just skews the video by 1 frame (show=true isn't showing any real information either), and mfToon gives me an unrecognized exception in Evaluate. I haven't had any trouble with DCT blocks though, but I suggest you use MPEG2Dec3 with cpu=6 (full postprocessing), as that was the first thing I did :).

cpu=6, did that first too :p , but didn't like it, cpu=4,moderate_v=10,moderate_h=10 has given me better results, but still not good enough :/
thankz for trying anyway... anyone else wanna take a shot?

You could try VagueDenoiser(threshold=3.5,method=1,chroma=true,nsteps=6)
It'll remove almost all blockiness but it may be too smooth to your taste. Try with threshold=2 also, it'll be sharper.

hmm. i downloaded the vob, and don't see anything particularly bad in it.
there's the old blended frames problem, but i've yet to spot DCT blocking. maybe my glasses are too weak...? btw, i'm using MPEGsource() to get the video. this may be a factor.
oh well. i'm seeing what can be done to it.
incidentally, i have the same problems with my UK release of Ghost in the Shell. DCT blocks all over it, especially scene changes. and bad telecine - it's PAL offset by 1 field, and then encoded as progressive (AAARGH!) so there are artefacts even after telecide.
i should just wait for the australian re-release that's coming out... they have a better copy of the footage and are re-encoding it.
i'll have a go prettying this up.

Well I have taken a shot at it again.. it looks that lumafilter in combination with have denoising help a great deal.. so I think that's gonna be done, untill someone else gets a better idea :D
I see you guys don't see any blocks.. well maybe it's just me then:confused:
[EDIT] I think lumafilter makes it look a lot better and GITS PAL source is bad, I know

I don't see it either, which leads me to that very question: do you spot those DCT blocks in the dark areas of the picture with a plasma screen ?
If yes, it's a known problem with plasma screens.

xxxxxxxxxx wrote a link removed until the site complies with the GPL with some new tools aimed to do exactly what you want
sh0dan says: sorry guys, this is how it has to be - no source - no fun!

This can maybe works :p..... BUT I can't test it
after changing thresh into threshold in the edgemask function, I still get a avisynth error:
Avisynth open failure: EdgeMask: unvalid edge detection
So anyone know how to fix it???
[EDIT] Ahh.. so this is a special version of avisynth I need to get

Delete MaskTools from your plugin dir. Both MaskTools and this build of Avisynth (still no source available?) have a fucntion named EdgeMask, but MaskTools being a plugin, it supercedes the builtin function.

I haven't read the thread, but thought it might come in handy for you. Maybe you wanna take a look at it:
